A Massive Batch of Bug Fixes for 20 July 2026
Over the past couple weeks, we made a concentrated effort to solve as many outstanding bugs as we possibly could. And after you've scrolled through this list of changes and fixes to Criticker, you'll hopefully agree that this mission was a success.
The following list of closed issues is long, but please take a look through to see what was worked on. A lot has changed, and nearly every corner of Criticker has been affected in some way. So, if you see that a new issue has appeared ... well, we won't be surprised. Please let us know, and we'll try and clean it up straight away.
For over twenty years, Criticker has remained a project run by a team of two. We do all the development, maintenance, customer support, marketing and more. And we've always strived to stay true to our values of transparency and independence, without any corporate funding or outside investors. It's an increasingly difficult market for truly independent websites, so if you appreciate what we do, please consider sponsoring Criticker! Not only will you get some amazing stats and features (and be rid of pesky advertising), but you'll be helping make what we do possible.
But now, without further ado, here are the Updates and Bug Fixes for 20 July 2026. There are so many, we have decided to break them up into sections.
Collections & Franchises
Collections counts include franchises - The counts shown in the profile dropdown for your collections were showing the total number of collections plus franchises.
This was a minor bug, but while working on it, we took the opportunity to make Your Collections page a lot more accurate.
Before, we just showed “Collaborative”, “Public”, and “Private” collections. System collections (created automatically by Criticker) were lumped in with Private collections, and Franchises were nowhere to be seen.
We’ve now separated out your System Collections and Franchises into their own tabs. For the purposes of “counts”, we only use your traditional collections – those that are Collaborative, Public, or Private. Hope this helps makes the site a little easier to navigate!
A couple more sub-types under "Your Collections"
No way to add a title to a pre-existing franchise
Inconsistency about adding to a franchise - Franchises are special collections, but they are meant to operate largely like collaborative collections – the person who created them is the moderator, and anyone can add to them. However, on the Collection page for a franchise, it wasn’t possible to add titles if you weren’t the moderator. You’d have to go to the Title Information Page.
Collection 'Sort By' Hides Rating - After re-sorting a collection, the ratings and PSIs were removed. Reloading the page showed them again, but clearly we should have been showing them immediately after the sort as well. Now we do :)
Problems checking and unchecking collection - A bug was making it difficult to remove titles from collections, when on the “Add to Collection” modal. We’ve been able to fix that up, thanks to some helpful pointers on reproducing the issue from the community!
Franchises included when adding to collection - When you choose to add a title to a Collection, Criticker displays a list of yours to choose from. Previously, Franchises were being included in that list, which wasn't intended.
Franchises are meant to be handled differently to other collections, and shouldn’t have been appearing in this list. It’s now been corrected.
Dash in collection titles - There was an issue saving collection names with certain characters like a dash, or parenthesis. We’ve handled that so you can have collection names with those characters!
Remove Watchlist Tag when viewing Watchlist - When looking at the database of films, Criticker marks titles that appear on your watchlist. That’s cool! But it’s less useful that we were still doing this “marking” even when you’re viewing your own Watchlist. Like, I know these films are on my Watchlist... because I'm looking at my Watchlist.
Styling
Summary of Num Films Sometimes Missing - There was an issue where the summary of how many titles were included in the film database, was sometimes not being shown. We’ve fixed that up, so you should see that number every time!
Now you can see exactly how dramatic the French are!
In a halfway narrow browser, some text overlaps - We adjusted the style so that the Title Information Page looks better in narrow browsers (which might especially be apparent on tablets).
Notification window behind the title - On narrow browsers, there had been an issue with the notifications window appearing underneath the name of a film. This should be fixed now!
Unneccessary vertical scroll bar? - On some browsers, there was a scrollbar stuck to the left-hand side bar of the Title Information Page. We’ve tidied up the style, so that is now hidden!
Delete button animation happens indefinitely - There was a minor issue that while deleting a rating, if you chose to cancel that deletion, the “loading” animation persisted.
Layout Shift on Modal Open/Close - There was an issue where opening modals hides the scrollbar which often appears on the right hand side of a browser. This isn’t really a problem, but led to an irritating layout “shift” when the modal was opened or closed. That’s been accounted for now, and modals should open without any shift!
Typos on the Get Started With Criticker page - A sharp-eyed user spotted a bunch of typos on the page where we teach people how to use Criticker. Those have been fixed up, and a big thanks to BadCosmonaut, for pointing these typos out, as well as all the other bugs reported!
Titleinfo shift while switching tabs - I think, though I am not sure, that this bug has been solved, because it was difficult to reproduce. Basically, the Title Information screen was shifting when switching tabs. If it’s still happening, let us know!
Screen width bug at narrow browser width - An error was reported about the layout of the Title Information Page, at a very precise width (like, within one pixel). We’ve made some changes to the page so that it looks better around that width.
Mini-review shows 2 lines on compact view - There was a legacy bug that some reviews were rendering on the compact view of the Title Information Page as multi-line. That’s been fixed, so the compact view should be compact once again!
Search
Search for Acronyms Fails - There was an issue searching for “Action USA” not returning “Action U.S.A” towards the top of results. We’ve got a future enhancement report to one day totally revamp our search functionality, but until then, we've handled this particular case with USA acronyms and search.
Profile & Exports
Export-Date sorting by Rating - A bug was preventing users from exporting their rating list in order of date-rated. That has now been corrected across all formats, so that exports can be done in the desired order!
Exports will now be sorted as desired
Characters being cut off when changing a Quip - At Criticker, you can adjust the colors and quips assigned to your ratings. But we’ve always limited quips to 12 characters. That’s still the case, but we had a situation where people thought they could submit longer quips. We’ve limited the text input, so that it won’t accept longer strings, and hopefully have eliminated that potential source of confusion.
RSS/XML feed export blocked by Cloudflare - Our Cloudflare protections were preventing logged-out sessions from easily loading resource files, like RSS lists of ratings, which prevented readers from seeing the information.
HTTP 404: RSS feed from Kumpel - There was an error processing RSS feeds for some users (with spaces or dashes in their names). That should be working properly now.
Rating & Rating Lists
Links to full reviews missing from recent ratings - Likewise, we fixed a bug had been preventing full review links from showing on the “Recent Ratings” section of the profile page.

No full reviews links on a filmmaker's page - If they exist, we want to show links to full reviews in every place that we show mini-reviews, so that you can read more. But we had forgotten to include them on the filmmaker’s information page. They’re there now!
Filters on "Your Ratings" page stopped working - There was an issue applying certain filters (such as genres) to your list of ratings.
Mark Submission Mini-Review as Spoiler - It was pointed out that when submitting films, you couldn’t mark your review as containing spoilers.
This actually highlighted a bigger problem, concerning submitting titles with ratings and reviews attached, so we have revamped this functionality.
The issue is that, at the time of submission, titles don’t yet exist in the database, which means that some manipulation is necessary to allow for “rating” the title. We can solve this cleanly by saving the “Rating” step for after submission. So that’s what we’ve done.
We’ve added a button to the submission confirmation screen, which allows you to rate the new title, with all the tools and checks you’d expect to see – marking mini-reviews as spoilers, the ability to leave full reviews, watch dates, and more.
"Show All (1)" even if a title has no ratings - There had been an issue with the number of ratings in a dropdown being incorrect when nobody had rated a particular title.
Secondary sorting on Filmmaker page - There was a small ordering issue, when looking at a filmmaker. If you had given the same rating to multiple titles from a particular filmmaker, the secondary ordering wasn’t in any discernible pattern. We’ve changed that so that, if you’ve given the same rating to (say) 10 of the same director’s films, it’s sorted secondarily by year descending (and third, by the title’s name).
Sponsor Features
Does this chart have to go up to 100? - While Criticker allows for a scale of 0-100, the use of that full scale has always been optional. If you want to rate films from just 1-10, that works as well. But our Sponsor charts defaulted to the 0-100 axis even for users whose ratings only went to 10. This made the charts hard to read. We’ve now fixed this! If you don’t have any ratings over 10, then the Sponsor charts go from 1-10.

Hide Ignored Users from Sponsor Features - You can ignore users at Criticker, whose opinions you don’t necessarily want to be influenced by. That’s supposed to practically remove them from your experience on the site. But there were a couple Sponsor Utilities that didn’t check on the ignored status before including them. These were Reverse TCIs (a fun utility to let you see the people whom you influence), and Concurrent Users (users who tend to watch the same things as you, regardless of ratings).
This has now been fixed, so if you’ve ignored a user, they won’t appear in these special features!
Games
Games Landing Page shows movies on it - There had been areas on the landing page for the Games version of Criticker, where we showed films and used language more appropriate for films. Those should now be fixed!
Games: TCIs are from Films - Games pages were sometimes showing TCIs calculated from films instead of games. That should no longer be happening!
PSIs & Recommendations
Streaming Information on PSI List - We've added Streaming Options for the rows that appear on the PSI List page. So now, you can generate recommendations, and immediately see where to watch them!
So many places to watch Mary and Max!
PSI Breakdown missing from rated titles - When Criticker wasn’t able to generate a PSI for you, the link to the PSI Explain page was missing, if you had rated the title already. Now it’s back!
Bug Reporting
"Date bug was closed" is incorrect - There was an issue in properly displaying the time a bug had been closed. This has now been fixed. Please note that this will only apply to bug closures in the future.
