Awkard pacing and direction ruin a uniformly great cast (including a game Joseph Cross). The director obviously has no idea how to tell this kind of story.

Doesn't quite make it. Lose the book-interview sub-subplot and half the music, and bulk up the natural drama in the center.

Marie Antoinette (2006) - Rated 13 Aug 2007

A hermetical masterpiece. Coppola takes our period-piece expectations and shatters them, concentrating instead on emotional impressionism as biography. It works.

Infamous (2006) - Rated 13 Aug 2007

Manages to be simultaneously more complex and less subtle than "Capote". If you weigh Hoffman's performance against Jones', Jones is the truer Capote - but Hoffman's inner turmoil has more breathing room.

The Departed (2006) - Rated 13 Aug 2007

Some amazing scenes, performances and cuts - but you can't help but feel like Scorsese could've gotten more out of the source material. It's terrific entertainment, but it falls short of his very best, richest work.
