Beyond a Reasonable Doubt (1956) - Rated 04 Jan 2025
"Slow but interesting. The premise is pretty terrible and it is super predictable that the plan, involving Dana Andrews deliberately getting himself convicted for a crime he didn't commit to prove a point, will go wrong. There is a twist that pays off that I did not see coming, but it was much too late in the story."

Scrooged (1988) - Rated 04 Jan 2025
"I don't like Bill Murray and do not find him "dry" and "sarcastic" as much as wooden. His character wasn't old enough to have the kind of past to look back on that Scrooge had. I liked Alfre Woodard's family as a good modern parallel to the Cratchetts, and was disappointed there weren't more clear parallels to the original story. I especially did not appreciate the disgruntled ex-employee showing up with a gun; does this not hold up, or was it never funny?"

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020) - Rated 01 Jan 2021
"Even Imdb reviewers who liked it said it wasn't Lol funny, but I thought it was Lol funny. Some said you'd have to watch Eurovision to get/like it, but I don't think so. Some said not to expect a great plot or depth, but this movie actually had a story and some twists. I really liked that Dan Stevens as the Russian competitor was not an antagonist or romantic rival, but just a friend to Rachel McAdams. Also he's amazing, I didn't even recognize him. RM was also super likeable and impressive.****"

How Do You Know (2010) - Rated 01 Jan 2021
"Decent somewhat unusual romcom that follows multiple perspectives and where the only villain/antagonist is Jack Nicholson as the too-despicable father of Paul Rudd's character. This movie would have been better if Owen Wilson had his own storyline like the other two principles do. Also all three leads are too similar in that they all seem a bit pathologically optimistic and prone to self-help speak for me to like them."

Stranger Than Fiction (2006) - Rated 01 Jan 2021
"Really liked the meta-ness of this one even though it didn't seem to quite make sense even on its own fantastic terms."

Wish I Was Here (2014) - Rated 01 Jan 2021
"I'm not sure I believed in Zach Braff's character, a sometimes zany father to two kids who have gone to a conservative Jewish school and are more religious than himself. But this movie had many funny lines and scenes, as well as some undeniably touching ones - with one particularly moving scene between Kate Hudson and Mandy Patinkin as her terminally ill father-in-law. I liked the audition scenes where ZB's character keeps running into the some of the same fellow actors auditioning."

Love Is Strange (2014) - Rated 01 Jan 2021
"What happens to these characters is pretty terrible but the story is presented as a matter-of-fact slice of life. Several good performances and many sweet moments, also some low-stakes domestic conflict. One odd subplot involves the grandson, who may have fallen under the bad influence of a slightly older friend, gets in trouble for apparently stealing antique French books and hiding them under his bed (why?). The ending was very abrupt and unsatisfying."

Indecent Proposal (1993) - Rated 30 Dec 2020
"Excessive backstory and not enough reason to care about the characters. Before and after the proposal, everything plays out pretty predictably. The worst part is that Robert Redford gets a pass on stalking Demi Moore because he's so rich and supposedly handsome and good in bed? I didn't really believe he liked her and rather assumed he chose his victims solely based on their desperation for money, but that was left a bit murky. In any case I was not impressed."
