Juuuuuuuuuuuuuust a bit too dark to be a knockout comedy and juuuuuuuuuuuuuust a bit too comedic to be a dark masterpiece. Plays like an excellent Death to Smoochy or a terrible In Bruges. But Christmas themed. An unearned classic that I admittedly watch with seasonal regularity.

The stellar cast makes this one of the more enjoyable renditions of the Dickens classic. Does it make sense that a world-class douchebag should suddenly be treated as a hero because of 10 minutes of spotlight-hogging Christmas cheer? Not really, but I consider that a convention of the genre. Misguided sentimentality is what Xmas is all about, after all.

As far as Christmas films go, this is in the top tier. Bill Murray is great, as usual. A great twist on an old classic, but Dickens probably still rolled over in his grave.

I sometimes feel that this film is a guilty pleasure, but I'm not sure that I should feel guilty about it. Murray has a ball in the quasi-Scrooge role, and Johansen and Kane prove to be inspired casting choices - genuinely entertaining. The many random cameos are entertaining, actually. The essence of Dickens is nicely conveyed, and I've found myself choking up a bit towards the end. It's by no means the best version of A Christmas Carol, but this is irreverent fun.

A genuine tour de force as kind of a one man show for Bill Murray - just 90 minutes of freewheeling, sarcastic, unhinged comedic energy that barely lets up for a second. This sort of comedic star vehicle doesn’t really seem to be a thing these days the way it used to be for the Murray/Carrey/Murphy types. Outside of that it’s kind of a saccharine little bit of fluff that just kinda goes through the Christmas Carol motions, and would have been forgotten 20 years ago. But Murray makes it.

An odd, mean-spirited spin on CAROL seems to have its ducks in a row, but everything about this is slightly "off" - feeling like a dry run for GROUNDHOG DAY, Murray's misanthropic Scrooge is an unpleasant creation and the "ghosts" broadly drawn and ugly caricatures; all this would seem par for the course, except the course correction into gushy sentiment at the finale is also misjudged, leaving the film feeling like an overdone turkey.

It certainly gets points for being the wackiest Christmas Carol adaptation ever. Bill Murray's really hammy here, but that's half the fun. And it makes a pretty decent job of adapting Dickens' tale to modern times and pokes some fun at the nature of big corporate broadcast television butchering classic literature. So! good for a Christmas movie in my book!

The problem is that while Bill Murray is at his hilarious best here, the movie built around him is completely mediocre. Of all the Christmas Carol films, I'd say this is probably the one to watch... but in the end you might feel a little, well, Scrooged.

Scrooged has its share of problems, but as an adaptation of A Christmas Carol, at least it tries something a little bit different. The acting is all over the place, and I wouldn't be surprised if the final act was both written and filmed by people using cocaine. It sacrificing some of the charm for a bit humour that intermittently lands. Easy watching, but not Xmas classic. Murray being haunted by the 3 Xmas ghosts; at least he knows who he's gonna call!

Scrooged isn't great, but around the holidays, it's a fun watch. Definitely no Christmas Story, but it's a nice change of pace from the typical holiday fodder that's all feel-good nonsense. Take out Bill Murray, though, and this really would have been worthless.

Kinda meh. It has its moments, but it lacks sincerity, and the modernized setting adds very little. Plus, Bill Murray seemed to be on auto-pilot, and far too many of his quips fell flat. The only part that really worked for me was the middle section where Murray was going crazy, in other words the part that basically had the least to do with the main themes of the movie.

(Viewed on 11//04/15): Scrooged proves that for this viewer, nostalgia only goes so far. I recall enjoying it greatly as a kid, but unlike many other childhood favourites, it just doesn't hold up. A modernised effects driven take on Dickens' classic wasn't a bad idea, but Scrooged often plays like a bad Tim Burton film: it's a collection of set pieces tied together by a rickety plot, but the set pieces really vary in quality. Murray is OK, but his redemption is unconvincing.

Dear Bill Murray: please marry me. Oh right, the movie. This is one of my favorite adaptations of A Christmas Carol. Bob Goldthwait does a good job of stealing every scene he's in. When he and Bill are *both* on the screen, it's a thing of beauty.

I always enjoyed this as a kid, but seeing it for the first time in well over a decade I can't say I still have the same affinity. It has its moments, and the first 30-minutes or so are still pretty amusing, but truth be told it's a very average reworking of A Christmas Carol, with just as many hits as misses (some things - such as the Ghost of Christmas Present - are downright fucking irritating). Murray does carry it but conspicuously never feels like a believable character either.

I know that some people really love this, but it just kinda limps along from one weak set piece to another, with Murray's natural charm and incredible talent as a performer singlehandedly buoying the material. Michael O'Donoghue, the co-writer of the film, was supposedly one of the great subversive voices of the early days of SNL, but there's nothing transgressive about this at all aside from a few lazy shots early on at the amorality of the television business.

Scrooged has a host of small enjoyable cameos like Mitchum, Forsyth, Goldwaith and Hollywood royalty John Houseman, but in the end it's a bad Dickens rewrite that lives solely off the energy of Murray. Besides Carol Kane as one insane fairy, Murray has to do all the heavy lifting himself. The problem with this is that Murray is best, when he's an asshole, so when he starts to become Happy Billy the thing falls apart. I enjoy corny x-mas movies, but honestly I enjoy Big Bad Bill Murray even more.

There's not much to say about this movie really. Sure its not as funny as you might expect, but it has all the Christmas spirit you're looking for at the holidays. Its pretty much just a pointless retelling of A Christmas Carol. Nothing is really good. Nothing is really bad. They made some vaguely amusing changes to Charles Dickens version but there wasn't really a lot of imagination into how it was all executed. Its a typical holiday cash grab that doesn't phone it in but also doesn't try.

Without Bill Murray, this would be nothing more than a boneless Christmas Carol. His erratic improvisational technique just brings something else to the table. There's still a nagging sense that they just ripped Dickens from the page and let Murray go off, but the mix of sentimentality and nihilism fits rather nicely. It makes for hilarious holiday fare, if you don't feel like the standard holiday fare.

No one can quite do a pompous, egotistical jerk like Bill Murray. He's pretty funny in this modern remake of A Christmas Carol, but a few of the jokes are dated, and I just didn't buy the almost-immediate turn of heart after watching his obnoxiousness for the first hour. A highly enjoyable Christmas movie if you don't enjoy the far more melodramatic and formulaic holiday films. Well admittedly in a broad view this is quite formulaic, considering it's based on "A Christmas Carol" but it's so irreverent that it manages to appeal to those that really don't want to watch Christmas movies. Bill Murray is superb and his closing monologue really feels authentically made up on the spot rather than a rehearsed diatribe.

Yeah, it’s maybe a bit too mean-spirited at times, and honestly Murray doesn’t sell all of his scenes, but it’s so freakin’ hilarious. It’s also surprisingly dark even as a Christmas Carol adaptation. The production is excellent too. Likability for the protagonist is always up to the viewer when it comes to this story. Farcical adaptation in which moral guidance is traded for bullying. There are two reasons Scrooged remains unburied by the sands of time: It stars Bill Murray, and it’s Christmas themed (almost guaranteeing it a place on TV each time December rolls around). If you want a film that shows Jerk Bill Murray believably turning into Nice Guy Bill Murray, watch Groundhog Day – it’s a much better film. Heck, snow is everywhere throughout, so you can even pretend it’s a Christmas film if you want.

Scrooged is a strange movie. Take A Christmas Carol, remove the family friendliness of it and add Bill Murray and New York in the 80s and you've got Scrooged. It's somewhat entertaining, but falls a bit flat overall. It hits the basic story of A Christmas Carol, but the ending lacks any significant indicator of change. If you're wanting a more adult, comedic version of a Christmas Carol, well this may your only option. Otherwise, there are more faithful renditions out there.
