80 81% Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) - Rated 26 Jul 2024
"An apt, though weak, story about saving fading timelines with a lot of meta-humor about forgotten heroes and the state of super hero movies as a whole. I don't know if this is the movie to save super hero movies - I can't say that I thought everything landed with 100% success, but I can say that I laughed a lot and was entertained for the entire runtime."
50 38% Batman Returns (1992) - Rated 25 Jul 2024
"About as silly as the first one, maybe even more-so, but still has some entertaining performances."
80 81% The Lego Batman Movie (2017) - Rated 24 Jul 2024
"Surprisingly funny and well-done."
50 38% Despicable Me 4 (2024) - Rated 23 Jul 2024
"There's nothing awful about it, but it's mostly just half-developed random feeling subplots that never seem to really go anywhere or pay off, all mashed together. Didn't have as many laughs as the previous ones."
50 38% Batman (1989) - Rated 20 Jul 2024
"Without nostalgia, it's hard to rate this too well for me. It's over-the-top silly. I like how Gotham looks visually, and Jack Nicholson is entertaining, but I could never take the movie seriously even when it seemed to want me to."
20 8% Overboard (1987) - Rated 19 Jul 2024
"Both main characters seemingly have a pretty unbelievable turn around in such a short time, they are psychotic early on... especially Kurt Russell and his friends, and kids, going along with a plan of essentially kidnapping someone with amnesia and lying to her for two months. It makes the second half of the movie much less endearing."
100 98% 12 Angry Men (1957) - Rated 18 Jul 2024
"Holds up phenomenally well. A simple story and set, but completely captivating from start to finish."
50 38% Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot (2024) - Rated 17 Jul 2024
"It's undoubtedly commendable what this little community did, but I can't help but feel like it would've been more compelling as a documentary that interviewed the actual families - but maybe the film makers thought they'd get more eyes with a theatrical release. When looking at it as just a narrative film, disconnected from the true story underneath, it does feel a bit slow, unfocused and meandering at times, and I don't think justifies its over two hour runtime."
80 81% Sing Sing (2023) - Rated 16 Jul 2024
"Well-done and heartfelt, from top to bottom, with good writing, cinematography, and performances all around. A large array of emotions and topics covered. Hopefulness and not giving up take center stage, but masculinity, vulnerability, expectations and friendships are all a huge part too, and the prison setting and reality-basis make for a good backdrop for these to shine through."
20 8% Drop Dead Fred (1991) - Rated 14 Jul 2024
"It has an interesting premise, but the writing never lets it get to any really rewarding moments, and most of the humor does not hold up well. Fred is a psychopath that essentially mentally tortures the main character, and by doing this that somehow allows her to realize she needs to leave her husband and stand up to her strict mean mom."
