90 92% Arrival (2016) - Rated 24 May 2024
"It's thought-provoking and is a more personal, humanity-based sci-fi than I've seen in a while. You have to be okay with not knowing all the answers by the end of the movie though, and be patient with the build-up to a not-so-explosive ending. It more sets a mood, feeling like a dream, and has a lingering impact. Really enjoyed it."
60 62% The Peanut Butter Falcon (2019) - Rated 22 May 2024
"The subplot with Shia being chased feels a bit contrived and unnecessary, and the romance feels shoehorned and like implausible circumstance, but it has enough genuine feel-good moments and humor to outweigh those parts of the script."
70 72% Baby Driver (2017) - Rated 21 May 2024
"Works great as a stylistic action movie for the first half, with great driving sequences and scenes that sync with the soundtrack, but the climax and side romance didn't really work as well for me as the rest of the movie. Still an enjoyable movie overall."
50 37% Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World (2023) - Rated 20 May 2024
"I liked the message and Foreman's redemption story, but overall the script feels lacking. It tries to cover so much time, with a sort of scattered focus, that it feels like it simultaneously drags and moves too quickly, and never really has the full impact you want, and ends up feeling a bit shallow."
40 22% Split (2017) - Rated 19 May 2024
"An interesting premise, and standout acting from McAvoy, but feels like it sort of falls apart by the end and can't find much of a takeaway other than what it tells you, "broken people are evolved" - which it doesn't really explore much, and it only shows in a very literal way. The scenes with the therapist also just sort of feel like they're shoehorned in for exposition."
20 6% Anyone But You (2023) - Rated 16 May 2024
"Eh, it's rich beautiful people escapist fantasy rom-com. Tries to be edgy with literally everyone casually swearing and making sexual jokes, but just ends up feeling even more immature and disconnected from reality. Some things make the main characters both unlikable at times, but of course most of the conflict comes from miscommunication and misunderstandings. It does have some laughs, and I like the ending montage of everyone singing "Unwritten", but it overall feels pretty shallow."
90 92% Unsung Hero (2024) - Rated 15 May 2024
"Thought it was great, integrates faith throughout the entire movie without ever feeling cheesy or like it's just inserting a random sermon into an unrelated story. Has a good deal of humor, but also heartfelt scenes of struggle and inspiration."
90 92% 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) - Rated 15 May 2024
"Just a wild ride of a movie, captivating and entertaining from start to finish, tense and surprisingly humorous. All three leads do a great job in their role, but John Goodman is the standout. Him dancing in front of the jukebox is perfect. I can see how the movie might be disappointing depending on expectations going in, it might feel like a bait-and-switch, or the ending might not be to everyone's tastes, but I really enjoyed every aspect of it."
40 22% Big Trouble in Little China (1986) - Rated 14 May 2024
"Had a hard time with it. It's obviously supposed to not be serious, and I did laugh at some parts, but it felt like a parody that wasn't fully thought out and was haphazardly and nonsensically thrown together. Maybe need to re-watch it now that I know the tone."
60 62% The Fall Guy (2024) - Rated 12 May 2024
"A bit rough around the edges, but entertaining enough, and has some really great lines that caught me off guard "What message do my movies always have?" "Nihilism is a valid world view?""
