There's Something About Mary (1998) - Rated 02 Jun 2024
I still can't get over Matt Dillon's pants being undone in his office when he's first introduced. The movie has a lot of good wardrobe choices like that throughout the film to develop or enhance characterization. Basically, it's more than just the big gross gags that stick in your mind.

The Pawnshop (1916) - Rated 20 May 2024
I don't quite get the constant fighting but otherwise there are enough good bits to elevate this

One A.M. (1916) - Rated 18 May 2024
A couple bits of brilliance but for the most part each gag outstays its welcome

Labyrinth (1986) - Rated 18 May 2024
The varying scale of all the creatures plus the unpredictability of everything helps give the impression of a near limitless world to be explored. It's a quality that is rarer than it should be in fantasy films that tend to all be cut from similar cloth.

Wizards (1977) - Rated 15 May 2024
Visually inventive with a fun soundtrack but it can't seem to decide on a tone. Also a good deal of the voice acting is poor. But the imagery makes it worth watching, maybe more than once. (Reviewed on VHS)

A Taxi Driver (2017) - Rated 13 May 2024
They crank up the melodrama too much in second half of the film. Maybe that's necessary to get the point across? I think it muddles the message but it's still entertaining at least.

Santiago, Italia (2018) - Rated 13 May 2024
From a craft stand point I would have liked more visuals of the city and the embassy. Maybe something showing how far away the embassy was from La Moneda. At one point a person mentioned a large group of people moving south; it's unnecessary but it would have been easier to visualize with maps, photos, or blueprints, anything. Still an interesting story and worth consuming but it almost could have been a podcast.

Giants and Toys (1958) - Rated 13 May 2024
Reminded me of Kobayashi's "I Will Buy You" but with a slightly more muddled narrative. I could easily see myself rating it higher on further viewings and I look forward to tracking down more of Masumura's stuff.

Penguin Highway (2018) - Rated 12 May 2024
Goes in narrative directions that lend themselves to some memorable set pieces. Generally cute and likeable.

Well paced and visually strong. Rewards repeat viewings.
