If you told AI to “Spielbergise this story”, this is what that felt like. If I had no interest in UFO’s, this would have scored significantly lower. Unclear thematic elements, unclear exposition. Juvenile, almost. Close Encounters was a labour of love. This felt like a magazine advertisement. The score feels externally imposed. Like Spielberg gave the composer a handwritten note on what to do, and the guy sent this in. Do any of the greats try anymore, or do they lose it with age?
