The Ear (1970) - Rated 20 Jul 2025
"What makes paranoia stronger is its connection to reality. In "The Ear," this part mostly works well, but the relationship of the couple and how they choose to handle the situation doesn't. As a result, the paranoia that was progressing and building well at the beginning of the film starts to become somewhat stagnant and no longer serves the narrative. That's how I felt. Still, the Czech New Wave is a good experimental space for paranoia-based thrillers, I guess."
Blade II (2002) - Rated 16 Jul 2025
"Does del Toro bring anything intriguing or new to the series? Not really. Blade had the potential to be a great comic adaptation, but other than Wesley Snipes (I mean, I know he is the centerpiece of it), does it really work to be great? Not sure. It has moments, though, it has some imagination, I’m not denying that either. The plot is too sluggish, in my opinion, and I don’t buy the idea to be a sequel."
Hot Shots! (1991) - Rated 16 Jul 2025
The Cremator (1969) - Rated 16 Jul 2025
"If this film were an academic article, I would have liked it more. That’s how it feels. Symbolism, angles, acting, and even the rhetoric around it make it seem like an academic piece. Or maybe I’m just a dumb person. A type of film I know I would like more in the second viewing, too."
Crimes of Passion (1984) - Rated 16 Jul 2025
Mondays in the Sun (2002) - Rated 16 Jul 2025
"This film, I know, I will never forget. Is it because it has the best story, or the most remarkable acting, or the fabulous cinematography? It has none of that maybe, but the soul it carries is unique in a way that most films don’t have. Conveying a reality and moments of that reality; that’s how Los lunes al sol builds its story. It has the sentiments but not the forced ones, rather these are the emotions that flow calmly in life."
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (2025) - Rated 02 Jul 2025
Man on Wire (2008) - Rated 02 Jul 2025
"One of those documentaries where the actual event is so crazy that the filmmakers try something different to match the effect of reality, and it doesn’t work. That doesn’t mean I didn’t like the film. It is interesting to listen to such an event from the witnesses, to follow it moment by moment, but that’s not about filmmaking at all. There is no remarkable contribution except creating an environment for us to listen to this interesting story from Philippe Petit and the team."
The Age of Innocence (1993) - Rated 02 Jul 2025
"Scorsese is not my favorite one as a director, but he is one of the most reliable and lovely people as a cinema enthusiast. He is always meticulous and deliberate in his filmmaking, and when it comes to period drama, this perspective helps a lot. The sets, design, walks, and thoughts of the era all work quite well, and the film is good not because of its story or plot but through the thoughtful structure of the rest."
Lady Vengeance (2005) - Rated 28 May 2025
"Instead of going after what the premise claims to have, the film is destroyed by aesthetic concerns and its formalism. Even though the plot has some surprises, an idea of feminist solidarity, and an interesting charm, it disappears in meaningless confusion in the second half. There is some attention to costumes and stage setting but not so much to the character development, story, and pace. Overall, it’s disappointing and a very weak end for the trilogy."
