I dunno, man. The film-as-essay is not an approach I'm unsympathetic to, and Kristeva (the very obvious muse here) is as good a framework as any to begin to explain the power of horror, but what I liked about Schoenbrun's work so far was the ambivalence of its images and this is just kind of an overt lecture (albeit one, I'll admit, that seems to have been lost on many viewers, judging from the reviews on here).

I don't think comedies of manners are a genre in which Keaton excelled as a director or as an actor; the first two thirds are a little dull as a result (and modern eyebrows might rise at one prominent bit of shoe-polish minstrelry). In the last stretch, the absurdist turn redeems the picture, allowing Keaton aficionados to play "How close did he get to grievous injury this time?" at several points.

The film's many restrained and subtle choices (and of course Sandra Hüller's captivating performance) are at war with a voice-over that aims for novelistic and frequently ends up remedial.

Truly the Freaky Friday of feeling a constant gnawing anxiety at the thought of being known by other people, occasionally rising to full existential terror. Parisians will appreciate the shots of some of our least prepossessing suburbs.
