"Very thankful I put off watching this for so long, as it hit very effectively with me as a 29 year old wrapped up in memories of the past and trying to figure out what they want out of life. Only Yesterday is a quiet, understated, lovely film with a very mature perspective on the passing of time and the forces that shape us. I wish the film had done a bit more in regards to stating that some of what Taeko went through was actually trauma, but despite this I left feeling well-nourished."
85 80% Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) - Rated 05 Jan 2021
"Gosh the animation in this, and the ways in which the creators keep coming up with new ideas to throw at you with it, is stunning. Transcends its genre."
25 4% Baxter, Vera Baxter (1977) - Rated 04 Oct 2020
"The looped piece of music was so maddening and distracting that I gave up on the film after 40 minutes. I'm willing to believe that my viewing was soured by me being worn out at the time, and that the film has a bunch of redeeming qualities, but I really did not get on with it at all."
90 90% Mogari no mori (2007) - Rated 23 Sep 2020
"I loved this film. Kawase presents these characters with compassion and sensitivity, never allowing things to spiral into sentimentality. Her touch is incredibly gentle, allowing the emotions here time to breathe. Its look at mourning offers no easy answers, just the constant forward motion of nature, and the forest's seeming acknowledgement of these character's emotional states acting as some reassurance that maybe your grief is on some level recognised by the world around you."
65 35% Sicilia! (1999) - Rated 18 Sep 2020
"Beautifully shot, and the film has a wonderful sense of rhythm to it. Sadly the actual conversations that are contained within this, and the themes they explore, largely left me feeling cold."
