Zero Day (2025) - Rated 05 Jul 2025
"Has an all-star cast and starts off great as an ex-president dealing with an unknown terrorist threat that takes down the electrical grid of the US. But then starts to meander and ultimately crashes with a strangely surprising but anti-climactic ending. After it all, I can't say that the 5-hour investment was worth it at all as the entire series just starts to evaporate from my mind with no lasting impression."
It Follows (2015) - Rated 01 Jul 2025
"Ok, it's not scary, but it is unnerving and also ... extremely well-done! It Follows clearly apes the original Halloween all the way down to its (excellent) synthesizer soundtrack. The vision of this movie is established and maintained so well that I spent most scenes just looking around in the background for where the monster was going to appear next. Sure, it doesn't make a ton of sense that the monster can interact with the world - much less be hit - but this is a great creepy watch."
Captive (2016) - Rated 29 Jun 2025
"Extremely well-done but it's not something I could watch daily. The subject matter is so depressing I had to take months - and even years - between episodes."
Migration (2023) - Rated 17 Jun 2025
"I know this animated kids' movie isn't for me but even for those types of movies I was pretty bored by this."
Ahsoka (2023) - Rated 08 Jun 2025
"It's the best-looking Disney+ show since The Mandalorian and also sticks closest to the feeling of the original trilogy. Dawson is great in anything she does and even looks good in most of her fight scenes and Thrawn seems like an excellent, if underused, bad guy. But, I just can't help not caring. I never cared to learn who Darth Vader was as a kid, nor who his padawan was, nor any of these other characters. Great-looking wallpaper."
The Blair Witch Project (1999) - Rated 04 Jun 2025
"I was as scared as I was nauseous (from the shaky cam) when I originally saw this in the theater. Upon a rewatch - and a little research - I was still unnerved in a good way but also really respect it. The acting is great and I learned a bit of the lore and creativity that went into creating this movie that makes the experience so much richer. It is a bit of a novelty, though, and I have no desire to see any sequels."
I Wanna Hold Your Hand (1978) - Rated 03 Jun 2025
"I still can't believe this is the creative team that brings us Back to the Future - perhaps my favorite movie of all time. This is just madcap buffoonery with terrible acting and cartoon characters and no matter how much of a Beatles fan I am, even I can't apologize for this."
Creed (2015) - Rated 30 May 2025
"A remake of the original Rocky, but so are all other boxing movies, so that isn't necessarily a bad thing. In fact, many Rocky sequels were attempts at remakes! What separates this is the new blood infused: a new protagonist, Stallone didn't write or direct, and Coogler brings a fresh take to the series inspired heavily by video games. That said, Creed's intentions aren't as clear - nor compelling - as Rocky's and all of the characters seem like lesser versions of their first movie counterparts."
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023) - Rated 23 May 2025
"For many reasons, Dead Reckoning (PART ONE!!!) is a step back for the series, especially after the heights of Fallout. The plot seems rushed and unfinished even while the entire movie feels bloated and too long. Old characters die and just get forgotten and new ones get shoved in and accepted for reasons. But some of the action is still just so fun to watch that I enjoyed parts of this in spite of hating the whole. I guess that means 60/100? I don't really know ..."
Gattaca (1997) - Rated 19 May 2025
"Thurman and Hawke are actors I've always had a fondness for but Law and Arkin are the real scene stealers in this subtle mix of sci-fi and noir. Gattaca has a simple story that works as a frame to paint interesting and complex moral pictures upon. I don't even know if Hawke is really a "good guy" because he could easily derail the mission for his fellow astronauts but he may also be the one who cares the most. "I never saved anything for the swim back" is one of those lines that stays with you."
