60 47% Batman: The Long Halloween, Part Two (2021) - Rated 19 Jun 2024
"Probably a little better than the first part because it seems to throw away all of its pretention and just be a regular Batman animated movie with the hero fighting his rogues gallery. Yes that's less interesting but the way the original idea was treated in the first was boring."
40 17% Cloverfield (2008) - Rated 17 Jun 2024
"What if there was a found footage movie with Godzilla? An interesting twist on the near century-old monster movie but 1) shaky cam found footage makes me sick and 2) it's neither scary nor exciting. Sure, surprising events occur, but we see them through the eye of an unbelievably dumb comedic relief and involve characters I can't care about. There was a lot of hype when it premiered, and I'm confused why upon finally seeing it 16 years later."
65 62% Baby Driver (2017) - Rated 17 Jun 2024
"An obvious Tarantino inspiration, Baby Driver separates itself by leaning less on snappy dialogue and more on the feature-length movie video aspect. While slightly derivative, this choice does work well both thematically and to heighten the experience. There was nice chemistry between the young lovers (especially Lily James), and Foxx brings his usual cool menace (Hamm, on the other hand, was a bore). However, the ending was overly long and threatened to crash the whole thing down."
80 78% Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) - Rated 17 Jun 2024
"Fury Road explores the long asked question: "what if the truck fight from Raiders of the Last Ark was stretched to a full length movie?" Amazingly, it never feels boring, meandering or too chaotic at any time. I loved some of the little bits of worldbuilding here too - guitar guy, the baddies spray painting their faces before dangerous stunts, and of course the Trump-esque main villain's rule over his city. Perfect casting with Theron and Hardy to boot!"
75 65% Alice in Borderland (2020) - Rated 12 Jun 2024
"s1: 70 // s2: 80. I seem to always come up against an uncanny valley in Japanese media and Alice in Borderland has it: over the top acting, too melodramatic at times, constant fake laughing. And you can't deny the fact that this comes out in the Squid Game's shadow. But there's something here and it's deeper than it seems. And, while it doesn't stick the landing, I kept coming back and enjoyed it."
70 64% Before Midnight (2013) - Rated 10 Jun 2024
"I like how this series continues to feel real at the characters' age and stage of relationship - and Before Midnight does still fill real. But less so than the previous entries as some of the discussions (especially the beginning half of the film) feel forced. It's a good, although a more difficult watch than the others (and I don't mean because of the subject matter)."
60 47% The Fast and the Furious (2001) - Rated 02 Jun 2024
"As long as you set your expectations accordingly, this is enjoyable. Big, dumb, fun but there is something going on here with the characters and I can picture how there's more excitement to mine here. I'm not a car guy at all and I didn't hate it - that must mean something."
55 31% Batman: The Long Halloween, Part One (2021) - Rated 28 May 2024
"It's fine, regular Batman fare but it's nowhere near as good as the original material. In the comic, scenes can be left mysterious and vague but this animated movie has to show action and reveal whole scenes and the story is poorer for it. (How many times do we have to see the silhouette of Holiday???)"
100 95% Before Sunset (2004) - Rated 28 May 2024
"A more complicated movie than the original due to both the character's life choices since that night in Vienna and their shorter visit length (just an hour versus a whole night). And the movie is all the better for it! Where "Before Sunrise" was pretension, "Sunset" is desperation. I was hooked the whole time and especially loved how this one ended."
20 4% Leatherface (2017) - Rated 22 May 2024
"Many times, trying to humanize a villain makes him less interesting (see Darth Vader, the Grinch, etc.) and add Leatherface to the ever-growing pile. I didn't think all of the acting was terrible (Dorf was ok) although most of it is in that over-the-top horror method that I just find annoying. This is dull, not scary, and needless."
