I went into Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln” expecting a biography. Instead, I got a film centered on the struggle to pass the 13th Amendment. That’s not to say it wasn’t worth watching. It was. It just wasn’t the movie I expected.

Spielberg gives the story enough realism that you can feel the bigotry, hatred, and division surrounding the issue, and understand how deeply those forces had already torn the country apart and how much blood had been spilled over them. Lincoln had a goal, and much of the film focuses on his efforts to figure out the best way to achieve it.
