Cure
This film is about the cracks that form societies walls. There is no boogeyman under the bed, no monster in the closet; it's all around them, us, me, and you. The water just under the surface that breaks as waves form on the outline of the beach. As I sit here and watch this movie, I think about all the things that leave me dissatisfied with our society and all the ways we aren't allowed to express that dissatisfaction. Even in the event we are allowed to express it, nothing changes. It's the kind of thing that leaves you angry, restless, and without hope.
The most exploitable and deplorable thing politicians do is create problems while selling false solutions—false cures. What this movie posits, or rather what Mamiya believes, is that the cure to the underlying violence of society is the destruction of the self. What happens when the violence that swells up inside all of us is no longer held back by the societal norms and pressures of everyday life? What happens when in a society of falsehoods, you confront the truth of yourself?
When you confront those falsehoods what else are you left? No outlet. Just a body hollowed out by the slow creep of dissatisfaction. Violence becomes an inevitable symptom of becoming hollow void, and we have yet to find a cure.
