Who would have thought that a show where Zach Galifianakis plays a rodeo clown would prove to be such an understated, mordant meditation on lower-middle-class American life circa 2016? It gets much of the broader comedy implied by the set-up out of the way in the early episodes, ultimately giving way to a resolutely low-key (almost dreamy at times) downbeat anxiety. It's seldom outright funny (although occasionally hilarious), but often oddly, unexpectedly strange and fascinating.

It's not awful, but it's far from being consistently entertaining. The show has its moments but they're few and far between. It's excessively depressing to the point where the comic relief just isn't enough to make the show worth watching. The characters, aside from Galifianakis' and sometimes Anderson's, are neither likable or interesting, and generally just obnoxious.

Galifinakis, Galifinakis and Anderson are joys to watch.

Just like the good episodes of Louie, this hits that sweet spot of comedy and drama, and this show always spends the right mount of time in either one. Each character is ridiculously funny for their own unique reason, like the cringery brother of Chips or the dry dead-pan persona of Martha. Very touching show since it's dealing with someone who clearly is oblivious to what will make him happy or not, and it can be painful, hilarious, and maybe cathartic to watch.

It isn’t exactly the funniest show and the plot wanders aimlessly. But it has these beautiful cinematic moments and can be very poignant at times. Also Louie Anderson is incredible - B+

Hard to stand Galifianakis but Louie Anderson is great here.

Gets off to a roaring start but loses a bit of momentum about halfway through the first season and never really gets it back. It remains funny, but as feared has turned into more of a sensitive drama as the supposed black humour has faded to a medium grey at best. Good enough that I'll probably check out the next season. [currently: seen seasons 1 & 2]
