Sam Elliott pretty much carries this one. A fair B western, Watchable but generic, "not good" is incorrect.

Conagher looks, feels, and plays like a made-for-tv western. That doesn't mean completely terrible, just rote, boring, and by-the numbers because Sam Elliott cares and it's hard to shoot the American west and not have it look good.

Somewhat a "feelgood western" — despite the rough and deadly nature. A story line free of surprises.

Though not exactly profound, these Louis L'Amour TV westerns do it for me. Can't go wrong with a laconic Sam Elliott with his manly code of honor and fast gun, lots of time spent on the range, and even a sweet romance that's not monopolizing the movie.

This sticks very closely to the Louis L'Amour novel and though praised by fans of the book I think it's a mistake for the film. Elliot (tough cowboy) is supposed to come 'in and out of the life of' a widow and they meet over one meal and not again in the first 1 1/4 hours of the film! I suspect the book was describing their thoughts of each other whilst telling their separate tales but the movie doesn't get this over. Mis-sold as an actioneer it comes across as a Mills & Boon romance.
