Derek

Ricky Gervais dispenses with his cynical-edged humour to bring us a lovely, funny and touching sitcom that actually seems to have a message running through it, that being that kindness is much more important than almost anything else. The cast are all excellent, but Gervais truly shines. We knew he could act, but, in this title character - a man with whom, there is nothing but honesty, integrity and kindness - he outdoes himself. Derek, as a character and as a show is easy to love

Gervais has crafted some interesting characters in "Derek", leading to several resonant moments, also thanks to the really good cast, yet the mockumentary style feels redundant, the laughs are few and the writing seems careless at times: the budget cut that is established early on magically never becomes a problem, hardly ever being mentioned again. "Derek" plays like a variation of what Gervais has done before: the trademarks are there ensuring the good quality but the spark is largely missing.

Gervais somehow manages to lovingly and tenderly make fun of and mock the elderly and mentally handicapped and the underpaid hardworking un-thanked workers of the nursing home industry. Not everything works, but I found quite a bit of it to be a wonderful mix of hilarious and touching. Some people are off put by Gervais' portrayal of a mentally handicapped character. I think Gervais did a good job of making a character that is funny rather than just poking fun at him.

Gervais is quite good and this is a nice little watch.

Seems like it should be offensive but people don't seem offended so I guess it's okay.

Not everyone's cup of tea, but I'm so glad I kept with it. I consider this to be a hidden gem. I don't know how Ricky Gervais manages to make it funny, sad, disgusting and a showcase for every human emotion imaginable. The strange thing is that this is the kind of film that should have everyone's knickers in a knot because it so politically incorrect, but the series has so much heart, that we feel compelled to give it a pass.

I'm still not sure if I know what to make of it. Part of me thinks this show would be nothing without Gervais in the lead role. But another part of me thinks it would have been better if Gervais had taken a back seat with the acting here. There's always something nagging at the back of mind that's oddly uncomfortable and distasteful about Gervais' performance. At its best though this can be funny and touching.

I've been a fan of Gervais's previous two shows and this is no different.It has a great set of characters that all provide laughs(needless to say Karl Pilkington was the best... By far)and also quite a lot of heartfelt moments which was something that I didn't expect. While there were some great emotional moments both in The Office and in Extras this is next level with quite a few scenes that pull at your heartstrings in a beautiful and heartwarming way.

Pretty much a sucker for anything Gervais. With that being said, Karl Pilkington steals the show...should have stuck around for season 2

I generally find Gervais' stuff to be a little hit-or-miss, which is to be expected because he's always doing things that haven't really been done quite that way before. He NAILS it with this one. Sublimely bittersweet. Perfect.
