Fleishman Is in Trouble

There's a lot to like in this miniseries: the consideration for different perspectives, some very well directed episodes (the 7th is by far the very best and worth sticking around for!), amazing Claire Danes in a multi-faceted roll spawning between bitch bossy and absolutely hilarious, Eisenberg being Eisenberg, good acting by the kids. i forgive it its problems and will recognize this as an honorable attempt at portraying coming-of-middle-age and would recommend it to people in this age range.

Drips with empathy for its main characters. It's not bad but it's also not great. What I appreciated the most was that Claire Danes' character was made sympathetic, and some thought was given to that notion that we all have some kind of competing narrative. What I did not appreciate was the saccharine navel-gazing of Lizzy Caplan's character. I still watched each episode and I empathized with the characters.

Fleishman starts off strong with good performances from its ensemble cast, but with each episode the show spirals down a meandering path of self-indulgence, increasingly unlikable characters and an ending that mistakes pointlessness with poignancy. The main problem is Caplan's Libby's narrative perspective which undermines the initial story she's recanting. Her perspective on Dane's Rachel tries but fails to make the character sympathetic, and the conclusion is just inane.

Extremely well-acted saga of middle-age malaise; a great showcase for Eisenberg and Danes, who are both terrific. A little too much padding and repetition in the middle episodes is outweighed by the more searingly dramatic moments that have the ring of truth about them, giving the series a cumulative weight which make the final episodes especially moving. Hit-and-miss narration from Caplan is the only serious misstep - maybe an Eisenberg-Danes tag team would have been more effective?

The verbose narration earns its place despite its prominence. It’s clever, actually, the way the narrator is weaves into the story and gets away with flowery, expositional language by the reveals made toward the end. Ultimately, this is a slow coming-of-middle-age story that asks intangible questions about intangible feelings, so it’s not going to hit home for many, but I found this compelling.

Someone should be ashamed of themselves to waste such a fine cast on meaningless mediocre drivel. I have to commend Jesse and Claire doing their best with the material.
