Generation X

Matt Frewer gives a really overblown performance; he didn't have to, but he did, and it's thoroughly enjoyable. It's the most memorable thing about this otherwise mixed bag of a film: it has its good moments yet is not short on awkwardness and letdowns, such as a host of sleazy moments, the absence of a plot for a big chunk of the duration, underdeveloped characters and superpowers, the poorly established dream dimension, a below-par action scene in lieu of a climax and a jacked up Irish accent.

How did a random network TV pilot end up this *slimy*? There's a lot of enjoyably stupid 90s stuff in here, but unpleasant scenes of uncomfortable characters in situations that feel adjacent to a sex crime happen over and over and *over*! Did they think their teen demographic would appreciate this kind of horny, or were they just compulsively stuffing it in, unable to stop putting freakin' Jubilee in situations where she gets leered at? Sheesh!!

Is Frewer mimicking Jim Carrey or did he come up with his persona here? Either way his goofy, manic villain is the only good thing. The budget makes mutant powers look as lame as possible. (1 guy stretches - an arm & instead of a Danger Room they have indoor rock climbing.) But what really kills this is the script which never builds momentum. It jumps around & abandons the villain storyline for long stretches where it tries to develop the cliched teens in ways that would've felt cheesy on 9021

Not great, but its goofy fun and Matt Frewer plays a fun villain, although most of the other characters are pretty bad.

For all 8 people that have ever seen this, I speak for them: this sucked.
