He had been badly injured in 1941 whilst on active service on board HMS Prince of Wales when she fought the Bismarck at the Battle of the Denmark Strait, and remained totally blind for two years, though he later regained some sight in his right eye. One of the best drama series, with the cream of British theatre actors of their day. John Hurt's Caligula needs to be seen to be believed. Sian Phillips' Livia is one of my favourite villains.

Well-made study of the depravity of later Roman times. Pathetic production values by modern standards (this is the BBC in the '70s, so think "Dr. Who" and "Blake's 7"), but solid material performed by an all-star cast; Sian Phillips in particular is outstanding, in a role that's much better than anything she's gotten to play in the movies. I'll watch this again before (e.g.) _Gladiator_ any day of the week

This is a great series, although it has dated because it was made back in the day when the BBC did most of its filming in over-lit studios. Nowadays it's best viewed like a filmed play. I can still remember the feeling of excitement as the title sequence began each episode when it was broadcast in Australia back in 1979 & again in 1980. Phillips, Jacobi and Blessed are especially memorable. Don't assume historical exactitude. EF 40, IF 35.

Had no idea what to expect going in, but what I got was a really great series with a terrific and deep cast of characters. New characters were being introduced up until the very last episode and each one immediately felt like they belonged. There's also some surprisingly great cinematography, especially with the scenes between Tiberius and Livia.

Tense, brutal, hedonistic, decadent, period TV series with exceptional performances ,but particularly so from Derek Jacobi & John Hurt. A tightly woven twist of plotting , incredible, hideous. Brilliant!

John Hurt is clearly the MVP of the lot, still hamming it up like the rest of the cast, but with such a mighty charisma that it's impossible not to be captivated. Jacobi's Claudius is alternatively obnoxious and brilliant depending on the age he's supposed to be playing, and his final moments bring the whole epic endeavor together quite nicely.

This is, without a doubt, the single most hammiest thing I've ever seen. Every English thespian who was big in the 70's is alternately bawling and shouting, and while it's fun to watch Brian Blessed and the like do it for a while I can only take so much. John Hurt's Caligula saves the score by a fair bit.

Bortset fra pap-kulisser og engelske accenter, er Claudius en fantastisk fortælling om de romerske rige!
