A true crime documentary that's more about the world of true crime writing/entertainment/arm chair detectives than it is about the true crime(s) itself. Definitely interesting and a nice tribute to Michelle McNamara's legacy.

Like Michelle McNamara's book, this is not really (or completely) about the Golden State Killer. It's a series about darkness, about being prone to addiction, about how the darkness tends to extend its tendrils in the light as well. Unexpectedly, this also turned out to be about rape culture. It's not just about a man who raped 50 women and didn't get caught for 40 years. Just look at how many other women involved in the doc were also assaulted by others and how the police reacted to the victims

Doesn't satisfy my expectations completely, but the serial killer hunt appeals. Feels like it only mildly touches on investigation in between continually honoring the producer's late wife. And with that, this is more a human story than the hot crime story it probable should have been. It brings together the victims and those dedicated to solving this long-unsolved murder/rape crimes. That in itself is novel, especially with the number of brave women stepping forward to tell their tragic stories.

Good stuff. But overblows McNamara's role in solving the case,. It is also repetitive and draaaags on at 6 hours, could and should have been done in 4.
