Iron Jawed Angels

This does not commit the sin of big-screen modern chick pictures -- _A Thousand Acres_ and _One True Thing_ come to mind -- of being all about, "Oh, We Wymyn Are So Pure And Noble, And Men All Suck". The pacing, direction, use of color, and use of music are pretty jaunty, actually. They wanted to avoid doing yet another stodgy period piece ("a brown movie", as the director puts it); instead, they went for "Butch and Sundance get the vote". They did it. It works

Well-acted, well-scripted account of the battle for women's suffrage, told from the women's side with some enthusiasm.

*very* made-for-TV, but fairly well acted, and enlightening and informative.

I wish this were worse so I could use the phrase "Suffragette Shitty" as my entire review. Unfortunately, it's just Suffragette Mediocre.

I wrestled with what to score this, & settled on a 65 over a 70 because once you know how many liberties it takes for the sake of Hollywood Drama (TM) it really undercuts the oomph of the whole film. It's still good that it got made, but many aspects of the narrative are either entirely made up or very misrepresented. Last act felt a bit slow. Still, there's a slew of strong performances here & the overall message that women had to fight insanely hard for a basic human right does come through.
