Michael Jackson was born in Gary, Indiana and entertained audiences nearly his entire life. By the early 60s the older boys Jackie, Tito and Jermaine had begun performing around the city; by 1964 Michael and Marlon had joined in. A musical prodigy, Michael's singing and dancing talents were amazingly mature and he soon became the dominant voice and focus of "The Jackson 5." Solo success for Michael was inevitable, and by the 80s he had become infinitely more popular than his brotherly group.

Let's be honest here, this was fascinating because it cast open the Neverland gates and revealed how mentally unsound Jackson had become. If you came away from this thinking that Jackson was fine you're either being clouded by nostalgia or contrarian. Clearly the man had severe issues. On the other hand Bashir comes off as a slimy piece of shit that embodies the worst of tabloid editorialism. If he'd left his opinionating out my score'd be a lot higher - and I'd have much less sympathy for MJ.

I'm not a huge Michael Jackson fan but even I recognized how exploitative and sensationalist this piece was. Unfortunately it probably led to a chain of events that caused the mental breakdown of Jackson's life and untimely death. The "facts" in this film are dripping with innuendo and in hindsight little substance. The only reason it gets a score at all is that it does give an interesting if not biased look into Jackson's life.

Predatory. Jackson comes across far more interesting and far more thoughtful than Bashir. And, while we're at it, more honest. In other words, a more generous score would have resulted, if the responses given by the interviewee were the sole basis for judgment; the ill will of the interviewer, however, and all the unfortunate consequences that followed from that, make it impossible for me to score it any higher.

Bashir presents a very colored and intentionally skewed picture of Michael Jackson. Sensationalism pur sang. Tabloid journalism, if you will.

Living with MJ exists as one of the few 'access all areas' pieces Wacko ever allowed. Filmed just six years before his death, it's more interesting to rewatch now after Leaving Neverland - not least for the brief scene with Gavin Arvizo and his siblings, but also to see the crazy life of someone who's been mega-rich since childhood. Half of the stuff coming out of his mouth is rubbish, yet you're still fascinated to see how this guy behaved day-to-day in the latter part of his life.

Despite the controversy of Martin's actions in conducting the interviews, it is very insightful and interesting.

[Distant -as aired] It was already clear then that Jacksons' life was a tragedy, this grubby hatchet-job sure didn't help anyone.
