Mythic Quest

Great cast and some fun writing but unfortunately the premise overstays its welcome. I also find it really odd just...how wrong they are about video games. I mean they have people playing MMORPG's on controllers. Maybe they should've done some research when making a show that's supposed to be for gamers.

Score raised for the rare glimpses into something bigger than workplace comedy stereotypes and a good cast. EDIT - had to lower the score a bit for later seasons. There were some brilliant episodes, late in season 1 and into season 2, but season 3 didn't capitalize as much, and season 4 even less. Its still a better than average show, but yeah. Note: I only saw the original ending to season 4 , not the updated post cancellation one.

The cast is quite good, and I love the little clips of real games thrown in. I'm also a big fan of Ashly Burch from both Ash Whatcha Playin as well as her roles in a few games I love, so it was great seeing her in a proper live action show like this. Each season seems to have a special one off episode that takes a more serious tone and revolves around different characters, which are really well done. I enjoyed the final season, but I didn't like that they retconned the original ending.

A surprising triumph! I wouldn't consider myself a big gamer but I do have a broad understanding of gamer culture and game development so this possibly helped MQ to work so well for me. While being completely different there are understandably a lot of similarities to 'Always Sunny', from Ian Grimm being practically a clone of Sunny's Mac, to the similar circle of damaged but likable characters. The mid season surprise of the Dark Quiet Death episode was an artistic gamble that paid off nicely.

It's hard to rate. Most episodes follow workplace sitcom tropes and then there are a few brilliantly written standalone episodes. Must watch: the Season 1 standalone episode, A Dark Quiet Death, starring Jake Johnson and Cristin Millioti.
