After being married to Irma for 25 years, Roy decides the stress of being a woman in a man's body has grown intolerable. He unburdens himself to Irma and their pastor, shocking them both. Roy's decision to pursue a sex-change operation is greeted with intolerance and disgust by some of his co-workers and members of his church. Irma eventually comes to some understanding, and supports Roy through his journey to becoming "Ruth." (imdb)

Not a bad film. It does the job, But it's not a very original treatment of the theme.

Tom Wilkinson's character seems like the least likely man to want a sex change. Jessica Lange plays the wife blindsided by her husband after 25 years of marriage. She is marvelous in this role. The subject is difficult and the situations are uncomfortable for everyone. I particularly liked the conversation she had with him about why he wanted a vagina, priceless. The pastor was a predictable hypocrite. Acting throughout was excellent. Dialog was also very good.
