Rise of the Zombies

(2000th rating). Proud (or embarrassed) to announce that my hero David Michael Latt has produced the movie of my 2000th rating. I don't think he has a bigger fan than me. Anyway, the movie is boring but there's a scene of someone doing a C-section on a preg lady, only to find out the baby is infected and gets thrown on the ground and gets his head stomped into the road and (spoiler) Trejo as a zombie. Awesome

Comes with not 1, but 2 close-ups of a charred kid's corpse, D. Trejo NAILING lines like "we're sitting here like sitting ducks," an on-the-fly C-section of a pregnant lady, a little stompy action when the newborn turns out to be infected, & Jordi cutting a reading rainbow-sized chunk of flesh from his arm. But in the end, it's the Jeebus logic that shines: "if there really was a God, why would he allow the death of 20 million people?" "I don't know, but the 3 of us are still alive, so Jeebus."

The writing is middling, and aside from the obvious heavy-hitters so is the acting, but when you let that go it would've fit in really well in the '70s post-Night, pre-Dawn wave of very sad b-zombie films. It's consistently hitting the mood Walking Dead wants to achieve.

Has its moments.
