This documentary, produced for PBS' "The American Experience" (1988) series, chronicles the struggles between filmmaker Orson Welles and newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst over the making and release of Citizen Kane (1941), whose protagonist (Charles Foster Kane) was allegedly a barely fictionalized Hearst. Interviews with contemporaries of Hearst and Welles reveal the intense campaign to suppress the film and ultimately ruin the career of its director. (imdb)

All us movie fans know this story, but it's still interesting. Furthermore, all us horror fans are delighted to see _Dawn of the Dead_'s very own Richard France as one of the interviewees; I never knew previously that he's an Orson Welles scholar. The instant I saw him in this I thought, "There can be no divisions among the living!"

Somewhat scatter shot. It comes out as more of a biography of Hurst and Welles then the actual battle over Kane. It almost seems to spend more time in the trenches on War of the Worlds than Kane! While recommended it is more interesting as perhaps the best pre-Citizen Kane examination of Orson Welles than any other video.

Fine documentary about (see title). There are some great insights into and obvious parallels between Welles and Hurst, and seen as a companion piece to the film, it offers yet another aspect of why 'Citizen Kane' is a masterpiece.

Adds nothing terribly new if you you've already read the film history, but it adds emotional historical footage that gives a greater sense of urgency to the "Battle". It focuses a bit too much on Welles' subsequent failure without redemption (that could exist in F for Fake, Falstaff). But then again, he does hold the record for the most Pink's hot dogs in a single sitting.
