The North Water tells the story of Patrick Sumner, a disgraced ex-army surgeon who signs up as ship's doctor on a whaling expedition to the Arctic. On board he meets Henry Drax, the harpooner, a brutish killer whose amorality has been shaped to fit the harshness of his world. Hoping to escape the horrors of his past, Sumner finds himself on an ill-fated journey with a murderous psychopath. In search of redemption, his story becomes a harsh struggle for survival in the Arctic wasteland.

A poor man's The Terror (Season 1) and though it starts strong, it eventually meanders into inane banalities under the guise of tying up loose ends. It feels like around Episode 3, all the writers left and they let ChatGPT write the rest of the script.

All these 6 part dramas end up as let downs. Although the story and setting were set up amazingly well with superb sets, locations and cast ( especially Farrell and O'Connell acting out of their skins), it started to fall apart once the ships were lost, and stupid decisions seem to take precedence by everybody. The final return to England was a return to pretty standard fare, with the denouement totally predictable. Why would Baxter and Drax, who had just shot a guy, let himself be killed?
