Does a decent job exploring the complexities of this case at the bustling intersection of paraphilia & consumer tech, and the family bits offer a fascinating record of something or other, with a poignancy probably proportionate to the weirdness of your internet history. The conclusion seems to be that, legally, this comes down to whether the database search constitutes intent. Based on the timeline, I doubt he was going through with it, but doubtless there was clear escalation in his obsessions.

So so documentary on a fascinating subject, the idea of punishing someone based solely on crimes they thought about, but have not committed. It's fairly slanted but it's correct in the logic that a jury cannot convict someone because they ar a freak and worried what they may do. That's not how it works. So bottom line, freaky creep gets freaky online but never does anything, and rightly loses his job and becomes a pariah.

Was Gilberto Valle about to commit a heinous crime? Was he just a fantasist? Or is the reality somewhere in between? The truth is impossible to determine, and this doc makes no attempt to draw a conclusion. Instead, we get to explore the case as 'thought crime', debating at what point fantasy becomes intent and if there's ever truly a way to determine guilt when the offence remains only in the mind. It might be just a decent documentary, but as a conversation-starter it's outstanding.

The story of a pathetic man with a sad fantasy life where he liked to pretend he had the ability to cook up chloroform and a viable kidnapping plot. He is then railroaded by the prosecution and thrown in jail for being a creepy loser before being let out again and made to wait to see if the prosecution can pull the same trick twice. I have little sympathy for him in misusing police resources but the doc does shallowly explore the case and how this is not a conspiracy case but a thought crime.
