To the Lake

Very good series. Nice to see such a wel crafted Russian series. It's fresh, has a unique style. Dark, dystopian, good music, more please!

Well acted, interestingly written road story to Finland, well, to Karelia. Lots of twists and nicely evolving characters. The end of the first season was a bit silly but other way okay. Anna Mikhalkova (the daughter of Nikita Mikhalkov) visited in one of the chapters.

In a not so distant future, a plague is spreading through Russia. Everything sucks and everyone is... horny.

Russian cinema has very specific merits, none of which are likely to be found here, because these actors could've just as well been speaking english. "To the lake" tries so hard to be a second rate amalgamation of all the tropes, quirks and hacks in western post-apocalypse filmmaking (incl. a refurbished 28 days later soundtrack) that it...well...succeeds.

The myriad of plot twists aside (which sometimes feels like it could be a deal breaker), this series is amazingly well constructed. Sure, it’s a bit melodramatic and campy at times, but overall it’s extremely captivating. I watched the entire series almost without blinking. It’s an odd show. Very Russian. Beautifully shot, well crafted, and thoroughly entertaining.
