Your typical "down the rabbit's hole" children's story... a dreamworld with lot of oddball stuff going on that has analogues in reality. The art direction is really striking, though. It's amazing what they're doing with computers these days.

it befuddles me how a neil gaiman story has not breached america before this, having seen his previous graphic novels, he warrents more than this. also on account of the henson company how did this not get at least a top box-office for its time? it had good acting, uttterly amazing writing and such an amazing story as to put it up with the greats. not to mention an excellent soundtrack.

The talent involved with this would lead you to believe it's a much better film than it actually is. What a shame too, because Dave McKean does manage to create some real "wow" moments, visually. It's just that the story he came up with with Neil Gaiman is completely flat. It starts to come together a bit in the second half, but damn(!) the first hour is boring. Though beautiful, the movie feels ultimately pointless, but the visuals make it recommendable.

An eye candy with very little story back-bone to back up amazing art design and fun cgi animation. Few years later another very similar story by Gaiman was picked up by Hollywood, and I feel Coraline is superior movie on about every aspect. Then again, art direction is something worth seeing, and overall the film feels unusual enough to gather a cult following around it.

I have always found Neil Gaiman's stories bland, but this was really too mediocre. Distorted hero's journey ina pseudo-,nteresting setting sometimes works well in comics, but it is really boring as a movie. Because you really don't have enough time to appreciate design and artwork of McKean.

Neil Gaiman is a GOD. There is no denying this. However, even gods sometimes create works that are flawed. This film, while clearly touched by Gaiman's genious still feels like it needs something...I don't know what it is. I love the movie, don't get me wrong. It's just missing something to make it yet another perfect Gaiman Opus.

Neil Gaiman's work is always genius. Brought to the silver screen, it is amazingly gorgeous and all we could have hoped for (and more). Gorgeous CGI, strange and beautiful things happen in this world Gaiman has created. I absolutely recommend it.

While it's got some cool images and effects, I wish I had enjoyed this more. I'm a huge fan of Neil Gaiman so I wanted this to be awesome but it's just kinda there. Helena's story is disappointingly derivative and uninspired, though well presented visually.

Surreal, stunning and BIZARRE, yet so captivating I spent all my time just trying to keep up and take it all in. One of a kind. There's nothing to really compare it to, but if Lewis Carroll had possessed CGI, and if Alice had been 15, it would have looked like this. It never made it passed 50 screens in the US even with Henson's name on it. WTF? Supposed to be straight to DVD. (I'm assuming the buildings at Brighton are/were not in such a dilapidated state in 2003 or the present.)

this had all the makings of an awesome fantasy story, but the characters didn't really have much substance. and the strongest element of the film is its visuals, but even those already seem a bit dated. it's worth a watch for the art direction, but i really wish more of it were stop-motion and practical effects, the cgi makes it feel a bit cheap. all the same ideas worked out much better in Coraline.

This movie is similar to that scene from Orange County where Colin Hanks finds out that the girl he has just met and hit it off with is into Crazy Town, revealing her to be utterly shallow. I thought Mirrormask would be a great fantasy film, particularly given the unmistakable Dave McKean visuals. Unfortunately, it's a turd wrapped in a nice-looking package.

Familiar Gaiman themes of hidden or alternate worlds/child swapping and doppelgängers. The Henson Workshop visuals (with Lynne Chadwick/Henry Moore influences ?) were original and exciting. Seemed a little long at 2hrs though, could've been tighter. Still; a bit of a gem.

Just because of art design is worth seeing if not for anything else. Well that is one really big plus, which unfortunatelly pushes down things like acting and plot. Not that they are bad yet everything that matters is surrealism. I recommend that you get seriously drunk/stoned and then see it. Probably it's gonna be awesome.

This wasn't as good as it could have been. I realize films have a budget, but this film needed a bit more money, as the effects didn't seem to work as seamlessly as they should have. It spoiled the illusion. A great story and a great concept and some great ideas for visuals that remains enjoyable without being able to stretch far enough to reach the vision.

Extremely uneven; CGI ranges from atmospheric to terrible, the creature and location designs are either inspired or boring. The narrative lets two characters hobble from event to event without giving the viewer a sense of momentum or emotional attachment. And ye gods, that terrible orange hue over everything. Tries so hard to be the new Labyrinth and Neverending story both at once, but only manages to be an incoherent mess with some nifty aspects.

Aesthetically pleasing and delightful to watch. I felt quite distant from the characters, but it allowed me to view the film much as I would a piece of art, and a lovely piece of art it is. Heart-warming beneath its surface, but this movie is more eye-candy than anything else.

The visuals are just fantastic at times and feel a bit like watching a surrealist painting come to life, but I was pretty underwhelmed other than that. Tries to be clever and charming but comes off silly and dull. Probably would have been a good candidate back in my college days when we'd light up and watch a visually trippy flick with the sound off and play equally trippy music instead.

A movie about a misunderstood, angsty goth-girl who's great at "drawring" pictures and juggling. Visually unique, but Neil Gaiman's bland script pulls the movie down. He should stick to writing books, not poisoning the screen with duds like this and Stardust (wait...maybe he should just stay away from compound words).

When I first saw the trailer I was a little iffy on the outdated graphics, but it works surprisingly well, especially with the 90's style coffeehouse jazz soundtrack. Some trip-ups here and there but otherwise a very inventive Alice-in-Wonderland-style trip into the imagination.

Unfortunately the Henson company working at that low budget weren't able to live up to my expectations for the directorial debut of a visual genius as Dave McKean, and McKean himself struggles a bit in the director's chair... But the Gaiman'esk story is sweet and dark, and all in all the movie is still definitely worth a watch.
