Re: 10 highest scoring new/contemporary directors
My movie watching has really fallen off, so my newer directors are ones with their feature debut in 1996 -- my median year (that's only 28 years, ago. right?) -- or later (with avg percentile and count):
1. Alexander Payne: 84.33 (3)
2. Jason Reitman: 81.33 (3)
3. Brad Bird: 76 (3)
4. Rian Johnson: 74.33 (3)
5. Byron Howard: 74.33 (3)
6. Guy Ritchie: 71.33 (3)
7. Lee Unkrich: 70 (4)
8. Joss $@&@# Whedon: 69 (3)
9. Christopher Nolan: 68.125 (8)
10. Wes Anderson: 65.67 (3)
Probably a reflection of how much Disney rules my world these days. None of this is surprising, except maybe how close some of these guys (and, they are all "guys") to the cutoff date.

Little bit ashamed of some of those rankings.
2. Christopher Nolan, 7 films (87.14)
3. Edgar Wright, 3 films (86.33)
4. Brad Bird, 3 films (85.00)
5. Darren Aronofsky, 4 films (84.25)

7. Rian Johnson, 3 films (83.67) --> Ranked Looper which gave me 3 films
8. Guy Ritchie, 5 films (82.80)
9. Matthew Vaughn, 4 films (81.00)
10. Doug Liman, 4 films (81.00)
Just an update. Still a little bit embarrassed.
1. Christopher Nolan, 10 films, 90.4 (sorry, Moribunny, but I think he's great)
2. Wes Anderson, 6 films, 88.33
3. Lee Unkrich, 5 films, 87.4 Pixar director

5. Danny Boyle, 4 films, 86.25
6. Darren Aronofsky, 4 films, 85.75
7. Pete Docter, 4 films, 84.5 Another Pixar director

Re: 10 highest scoring new/contemporary directors
Sticking with >1996 debut, although arguably it should be >2006 now:
1. Chang-dong Lee 78.3
2. Yorgos Lanthimos 73
3. Louis C.K. 70.8
4. Lynne Ramsay 70
5. P. T. Anderson 69.8
6. Zhangke Jia 69.2
7. Joon-ho Bong 66.2
8. Ki-duk Kim 63.7
9. Denis Villeneuve 61.8
10. Robert Eggers 59.6
Biggest change is that Apichatpong Weerasethakul has dropped right off my list from previously being #1. He would have been #11. My estimation of his work hasn't really changed; looks like I just found a few films of his that I disliked.
Properly "new" directors to my list are Yorgos Lanthimos, Denis Villeneuve, Robert Eggers.
(I decided to remove Shannon Hartman from consideration as I don't think they really fit the spirit of the list)
