Ichiko lives the life of a hikikomori (shut-in) at her parents' home. However, when her sister gets a divorce and moves back home, Ichiko decides to move out and live on her own because they don't get along. The only minor happiness in Ichiko's dreary life is working at the 100-yen store where she can catch glimpses of an aging boxer named Yuuji practicing at a nearby gym. (imdb)

This was quite possibly the best boxing movie I've ever seen. I was completely enthralled the entire time. The acting felt really in all its awkward glory.

The boxing drama part of the film is engaging, but then there's the straight out of a manga, quirky cast of supporting characters that you see all too often in Japanese movies.

52 where "52" is my enjoyment - for the grim realism I can easily see others giving a higher score. To me, best described as a romance involving damaged people for who there is little chance of fame and fortune but maybe, just maybe some happiness. The only possible comedy I could see was laughing AT characters or cruel humour. The grim realism of the lot of the underclass presented little entertainment to me but others may differ. For me, the female lead is superb and damn near rescues this.

A well-made character piece with a compelling lead performance by Sakura Ando. It managed to undercut my expectations of where it was going several times.
