Carradine is very creepy here. This is a very effective horror film with a fine European flavor. Surprising what Ulmer could do on a low budget.

Surprisingly good for such a low budget horror story of Bluebeard (1944). One of those miracle creation of Edgar G. Ulmer. Finding the right actors helped of course. John Carradine as the smooth killer and often underrated Jean Parker as the girl of his desires. That was good casting. But it wasn't just the cast, it was the whole look and atmosphere of this production. Professional through-and-through. Amazing that this one came out from the poverty row outfit PRC!

It's a pretty film, but it has no spark. It takes a long time building up to rather mediocre finale.

Nice gothic atmosphere, but the version I saw was in dire need of restoration. This is actually a good film, bolstered in large part by John Carradine's performance. Gets better as it goes along.

Carradine carries the day. A tight thriller aided by cult auteur Ulmer's atmospheric direction.

Unexceptional in just about every way. I hope they paid the composer by the note because his damn score wailed inappropriately through every scene.

Atmospheric period noir with Carradine doing a fantastic job. Ulmer crafts some wonderfully off-kilter sequences and areas rich with deep shadows. The story is tight but not rushed, and the piece as a whole has a creepy mood to it, with a compelling central character. However, the score is layered over single second of the film. It's far too distracting and overwhelming. Otherwise it's a good film, but once you realize the music is continually going it's hard not to keep thinking about it.

PirateBay.
