For the first time in my life, I think I might understand why some people say they don't like "old" movies.

"Magic Town" is a feel-good movie driven by Robert Riskin's script and James Stewart's persona. The film has a Frank Capra feel about it, but the pacing and shots are all Wellman.

Works, both because of Stewart's charm, and because of the satirical elements scattered willy-nilly like birdseed in front of a park bench. A guilty pleasure.

James Stewart in a small town, being charming, yes simply, being James Stewart. That's a proven formula, even he is a little less sympathetic in Magic Town (1947). Not that he isn't reformed, thanks to the delight that's Jane Wyman, so regardless of early attitudes it's what we all love from Stewart, which makes this incredibly easy to enjoy. On a sadder note, it's a send-off to three very familiar faces of old Hollywood. Donald Meek, Harry Holman & Ned Sparks.
