Scenes from a Marriage

I enjoyed it but I feel like it missed an amazing opportunity to be truly real and raw, paricularly in the way it portrayed sex and jealousy during and after the marriage. I feel like it held back.

Honestly, I think I prefer this version better as I think the pacing kept me more engaged.

For some reason, I have only ever watched the theatrical cut of this film (twice now) even tough I own both. I know I'm selling myself short, but this film is so rich I have never felt short-changed by the mere 3 hour runtime of this version.

The direction from Bergman here doesn't seem to be anything special, or at the very least is not at all flashy, but there's something to be said for a director who knows he has the goods when it comes to screenplay and acting talent and gets out of the way to give his talent room to work. I think that's what Bergman does here, and it's a wonderfully honest, emotionally complex film about a couple, absolutely brilliantly played by Ullman and Josephson. Pretty much flawless. (Theatrical version).

Completely absorbing despite a couple of scenes that seems too forced.

Kind of the ur-Woody Allen movie. I find the end smug and somehow stupid in its reflections on the spiritual and earthly possibilities of love. Complementarily, the palpable distaste for children and the sorts of lives and loves they construct is asinine. But there's a lot that's genuinely raw and moving here.
