Shrek Retold

Almost impossible to rate. Obviously made with the kind of passion that makes internet fandoms what they are, this project is equal parts amusing and tiresome, creative and obnoxious. It doesn't work at all as a standalone piece of entertainment, but it was never meant to - this is a silly goof made by fans, for fans (and deeply devoted fans at that). Best consumed a few minutes at a time to prevent brain damage.

Obviously a joke, but I can't help but love it

Can I call Shrek Retold good? No, I certainly cannot. Not for a joke and not because of how much work went into it. However, I am glad this exists as there is no more true sign of a fandom than this many people working this hard to make something this bizarre, funny, meta, and unnecessary.

This represents the idea that you can tell the same story with the exact same dialog but the experience of watching it can be dramatically different if you change the presentation of it. This is what makes this film inherently interesting to me. Shrek was a visually plain film to begin with so something that does something wild with that makes it all the more engaging. Some parts of it were awful, but the inconsistency of presentation and the crazy visuals make this an enjoyable watch.
