I had no idea I'd watched this before until I came here and saw that I had ranked it already. I hope that doesn't happen again.

It seems something essential was lost in translation.

I wasn't sure what this movie wanted to be. It tried to do too much, and while it did break new ground in certain directions, it also reminded why that ground wasn't broken before. As a hitman movie, it's interesting to watch to see the differences; otherwise, it's worth it to see hitmen versus ninjas.

Could be the blueprint for every Jason Statham movie ever made but played out at half speed so you can marvel at all the crap dialogue and crappier plotting. I'd never have thought a movie with James Caan and ninjas could be this bad and this dull. Peckinpah was clearly dialing it in (and hanging the ever solid Caan out to dry.) Might have been better as a pilot for a Donald Bellisario TV show.

"This is the logical extension of what Howard Hawks did with a lot of his movies." http://illusionpodcast.blogspot.com/2015/10/episode-73-long-fall-of-sam-peckinpah.html

Peckinpah settles for glibness -- in the plotting (double- and triple-crosses in an assassination corporation under contract to the CIA), in the philosophy kicked around casually between professional gunmen ("There's not one power system that really cares about a civilian"), and in the he-man characterizations (Hopkins hangs his head and mumbles under his breath, mortified to admit that his first name is "Jerome").

How on earth was this a Peckinpah film? Besides the script problems the direction is plodding and the whole thing is in need of an editor to hew large chunks from this baggy mess

Made back when boys'-night-out action flicks still dared to be truly naturalistic and docu-style. Not shakycam melodrama masquerading as such.
