The Quiet Family

Went into this not knowing what was in store but guessing that there'd be some horror involved. Was surprised to find that The Quiet Family, while certainly gruesome at times, is actually just a funny drama with a nutty premise. Even more surprising is the fact that it stars both pre-stardom Song Kang-ho and pre-stardom Choi Min-sik (who I didn't recognize until the movie's last half hour). Everyone turns in a good performance, and the result is a fun, only-works-in-Asia type of flick.

While I understand that this is a better-constructed movie with a stronger narrative, I think I prefer the Miike version best. This seemed a little... "common." I wonder if liking one over the other is a matter of which one you saw first.

The movie really started out strong and had a lot going for it but ultimately I thought the movie as a whole was underwhelming. The scenes started to get repetitive and the story itself lacked any forward momentum. A fun watch but I prefer the Miike remake.

I found this movie to be exciting, funny, crazy as hell and highly entertaining!
