Audie Murphy is one of the few known human beings to star in the movie version of his own autobiography. A small man, he had to beg to be let into the army and then beg again to get an overseas assignment during WW2. He went on to become the most decorated American soldier of the war. Damn good war movie

I read that Audie Murphy cut out some things because he thought that nobody would believe it. The stuff that made it in the movie is crazy anyway, I think. Example: The man is operating a turret on a tank that is on fire and repels a brigade of Germans, and gets shot a couple of times. After he is sure that the Germans retreated, he gets off the tank. Then it explodes. His tour of duty was like a big budget action movie, so they turned it into one; resulting in pure awesome.

Murphy played himself quite convincingly and the story wasn't bad.

What would otherwise be utterly standard WWII fare is made unusually compelling by having America's most decorated war hero star as himself. The legend of Audie Murphy's battlefield valour looks far more impressive on paper than how it's presented here though, especially during the climactic incident where he holds off dozens of Germans on a burning tank's mounted machine gun, which should be a grander sequence given that his famous stand lasted a full hour in reality.
