"Leitch is on track to become the go-to guy for non-masterpiece fun action, and this might be his best yet. Great cast, good action, Fun!"

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 (2014) - Rated 15 Jun 2025
"I can’t remember a single instance of the studio maneuver of splitting final books in order to milk franchises to their semi-final drops (until it’s time to roll out the prequels) actually feeling necessary, but this may be the most blatant example I can think of for how very bloated and unsatisfying thar can get."

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (2023) - Rated 15 Jun 2025
"While solidly directed, this really made me yearn for the relative subtleties and ambiguity of the book (of which I wasn’t a particularly big fan anyway), without which the second half makes little sense and falls completely flat. Plus, you know, there’s little to justify the existence of this outside monetary reasons."

Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning (2012) - Rated 03 Jun 2025
"The first scene is amazing, then it switches to a very decent Noir thriller to an ultra gory and well choreographed action movie to basically a meaningless video game to a pretty smart and meta ending. Seeing as Superhero movies have basically driven this kind of DtV action movie into the underground, we should be grateful this kind of movie still gets written, produced and directed."

Project Wolf Hunting (2022) - Rated 03 Jun 2025
"The strangest thing happened about halfway into this movie full of extreme and almost non-stop violence: I realized I was bored and actually had to finish this in a second session. It just gets numbing (the cries of a million watermelons, silenced by a sound designer that hates Cucurbitaceae) and somehow overwrites any suspense it should have on paper. Pretty cool showdown, though, which is some solace."

"Image Lynch doing grind-, not arthouse and you’re there."

Zatoichi: The Festival of Fire (1970) - Rated 03 Jun 2025
"If, like me, your lead to here because of your interest in badass chanbarra/jideilki/samurai movies, be warned this, be warned that this contains not only what you’re looking for (it does feature some great camera work and sword fights), but also a bad amount of homophobia and lots of scenes that are more Laurel and Hardy than Kurosawa and Mifune."
