36 7% Heavy Metal (1981) - Rated 17 Feb 2024
"I don't think it could be summed up any better than user NilkyNarfy's "Your stoner uncle's music collection meets your stoner uncle's porno collection...""
78 41% Return to Oz (1985) - Rated 17 Feb 2024
"Immersive film despite being 80s-bad in all the worst ways. The lead actress was outstanding, and the creative elements of the world (aside from the cringeworthy wheel guys) were appealing. Especially impressive was the rock-face minion animations - rivalling any modern special effect in execution or imagination. Convincing motivations unraveled in the last half, very unclear what or why the antagonists were doing what they were doing, and Dorothy's home life ends in an unexplained 180."
73 31% The Notebook (2004) - Rated 16 Feb 2024
"Finally saw this after years of expecting the worst; it's actually a competent film with a refreshingly believable romantic dynamic between the leads. There's a middle section of the plot containing arguably the most interesting period of either main character's life that is wastefully breezed through, and the ending is as needlessly forced as it is predictable, but overall it did more than it needed to end up a charming experience."
68 22% Stardust (2007) - Rated 16 Feb 2024
"well-crafted plot but a couple unbearable acting performances and muddled character motivations make this hard to suspend disbelief and enjoy"
23 4% Escape from New York (1981) - Rated 16 Feb 2024
65 19% Phantom Thread (2017) - Rated 06 Nov 2023
"a nothing movie where nothing moves forward. disappointed that two of my favorite cinema talents got together and this was the result. On the upside, there is the discovery of Vicky Krieps, who outshines the legend across from her and the dismal script she was given to work with. The cinematography is likewise superb, though it serves as a kaleidoscope to dazzle and distract from the utter lack of plot."
94 92% Bo Burnham: Inside (2021) - Rated 16 Oct 2023
"this is a masterpiece, both as a comedy special, a music "video", and a piece of cinema. the misplaced white guilt was a bit nagging throughout, but it's a telling timestamp and one of many expressions of Bo's and society's collective mental illness in this incredible portrait."
