"Who saw Farrell's chiseled torso and thought 'Yeah, just a random factory worker'?"

La bonne épouse (2020) - Rated 03 Jul 2025
"Provost attempts to have fun with patriarchal views of women's role as homemakers in Western Europe, and especially at how a nontrivial number of them had (or have?) been well indoctrinated to defend them. But the script juggles quite a few flavors of comedy, and most of them feel so forced that even Binoche often resorts to exaggeration. In its final half-hour or so, the film embraces an increasingly wild and farcical style; for a moment it hits that sweet spot, then blasts over it."

Nitram (2021) - Rated 03 Jul 2025
"Plays and looks like typical American-style arthouse fare. The understated but still theatrical acting. The host of handheld close-ups in washed-out colors, with the occasional saturation nodding to the 90s setting. What I don't get, however, is what story Kurzel wants to tell here. Is he trying to frame Bryant's actions as a product of a dehumanizing societal and economic context? Because even just with an outrageously typecast Jones in the lead, all we get is some creepy lunatic stereotype."

Jackie & Ryan (2015) - Rated 02 Jul 2025
"A premise straight out of some Hallmark screenplay backlog is brought to life with enough cinematic dignity to justify a Venice premiere. Heigl and Barnes's sincere, understated performances are framed with intimate, handheld shots and the exact same pale colors we've come to associate with cinematic portrayals of rural America. Though all of these elements are decent, the overall lack of edge and individuality stops Mann's effort from being anything near memorable, artistically or emotionally."

Utøya - 22. juli (2018) - Rated 02 Jul 2025
"Largely immersive due to the one-shot approach and Berntzen's committed performance. With the plot unfolding in real time and her character staying far from the shooter, there are bound to be parts that sag, especially when she's joined by less convincing peers - in a particularly egregious bit late in the film, Holmen looks ready to burst into nervous laughter. Beyond this, however, those parts are ultimately just as potent; they let the dread settle and create a bitter false sense of security."

"If you also watched the first 30 minutes of this film and thought it would be a heartfelt, empowering drama about adult underachievement, well, we've both been played."

Eroika (1960) - Rated 01 Jul 2025
"Much of the visual interest is due to the B&W playing up the contrast among various elements of both the scenery and the characters. A cemetery lying between a dark mountainside and a bright sky, a white mask emerging from the shadows of a dim room, the light of torches carried around a lightless grove. Yet, despite lavish sets and costumes, the mise-en-scène is weak, owing to the awkward performances of the non-professional cast, which verge on laughable at the film's more dramatic moments."
