Bio: I make no claims of objective or internally consistent evaluation!

I love TV. I like most genres and formats. I obviously love "good TV." But I can also almost always find the good in "bad TV." Can't stand boring/sluggish TV, though.

I struggle with movies. The format, not the content. For whatever reason, I can spend 6 hours straight watching a show, but cannot commit to 90–120 minutes for a movie. I always feel like I'm thinking about how much of the movie I've gotten through and how much is left—even when I am really enjoying what I'm watching!

My ratings and percentiles are a mess because I only remember the shows and movies that I liked, I cannot handle the 100-point-scale granularity, and all my ratings skew high. rip

"a good zombie movie with a moral that in any other movie would have been an eye roll, but it worked rather well here. formulaic in many ways, but well executed. i cried out the entire water content of my body at that last scene."
88 42% Fight Club (1999) - Rated 22 Nov 2023
"Unfortunately for me, I watched the show Mr. Robot before I saw Fight Club, and I found out while seeing this movie for the first time that Mr. Robot was one big reference to it. So while I enjoyed this movie, my experience of it was sullied by Mr. Robot (a fine show, but I would definitely pick seeing Fight Club first)."
46 4% Star Trek: Picard (2020) - Rated 22 Nov 2023
"[s1 & s2] Beyond the proper nouns and cheap references, there's nothing about this show that feels like Star Trek. It feels insulting to call this Star Trek and to think that a thin skin of nostalgia (not even well executed) is all that fans want. The concept of the show itself is flawed—I do not want a Great Man narrative from Star Trek (not that it achieves that anyway). Star Trek aside, it doesn't even do basic TV things well *at all.* It's not even a serviceable or mediocre generic sci-fi!!"

"fresh off binging the whole series (so i might change my mind after things settle): production, acting, casting, directing—great. writing—just ok (it did not live up to my expectations based on how much this aspect was specifically praised)"
57 9% You People (2023) - Rated 08 Feb 2023
"Good potential; shitty execution. There were some good laughs, but I cut my losses and stopped watching 70 minutes in. The attempted social commentary moments were awkward and cringey, which could be a great emotional device—but they didn't come with real valuable insight, a clear message, or even any character growth at all, so it was just uncomfortable. I'm also just not a big romcom guy. And they did these goofy iMovie-like transitions between scenes that did not work at all."
91 55% Better Call Saul (2015) - Rated 08 Feb 2023
"maybe it's bc i only watched the first 2 seasons live & only in jan 2023 watched it all—maybe it's bc i binged it, but it just didn't seem to impact me as much as it has others. i loved all the usual vince gilligan shit—100 dollar bills fluttering by a cactus or w/e lol. but the strong parts (e.g. mike; varga) didn't blind me to the weak parts (e.g. gus focus unnecessary; kim character slightly off). don't get me wrong—it's a great show. i just don't seem to have gotten as much out of it as most"
98 98% 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) - Rated 08 Feb 2023
"The first 17 minutes shoulda been 1-3 minutes, and the last 17 minutes shoulda been 10 minutes. But the middle 1 hr 40 mins was PERFECT. So visually striking. Every shot had such excellent composition. The sound and the soundtrack; the art & design; the tension—all amazing."
