"Cool ideas; meh execution. The first hour and the second hour differ dramatically, and I don't think the opening half earns all the payoffs it [meanderingly] prepares. A lot of plates just get dropped. The characters seem far away from the audience. I liked the take on vampires and the experimental moments."

"I liked its charm and not its substance. The first hour is interesting and aimless; the second hour is annoying and falls apart. The characters are all inert, glib sketches with nowhere to go, so the plot extends itself. We got the first draft of some unknown, better film."

"The director's cut is a spectacular film with a letdown of a screenplay. The script is so proud of Balian and you could just delete him. He spouts writer-stand-in piousness, except when he commits writer-stand-in adultery with the pretty lady. Plot happens to him. We could've watched the predatorial factions of Jerusalem circle the jenga tower for two fascinating acts, until it collapses gloriously with the siege. Instead it feels like a too-long montage. The two kings are highlights."
