It's ... alright. I was hoping for more. It's a solid enough sequel to the original trilogy, and while it's not exactly groundbreaking, it's well told. It just gave me the impression that everyone involved (except perhaps Ford) was Very Serious About Making A Good Star Wars Film, to the detriment of individuality and charm. Maybe I'd have liked it more if I'd seen it when I was a kid, like the OT. Maybe I'll like it more on a second viewing. In the meantime.... eh. It's okay.

Probably about the best screen version of the book one could hope for, given the source material's simultaneously technical and irreverent nature. While some depth of character might be lacking, Scott's skill at contrasting human moments with epic scale is a great match for the story, and I never doubted for a moment in what I was seeing.

I got pretty much what I was hoping for, a fairly standard super-hero origin film that had fun cracking jokes at its own expense, and the genre in general. Not a masterpiece, but highly enjoyable and solidly well made.

While there's occasional elements that haven't aged gracefully, they are blown away by the incredible cinematography, the sheer epic scale of the film and the riveting transformation of O'Toole in the course of the narrative. Still deserving of every one of the accolades heaped upon it.
