Christopher Nolan, I'm so sorry I ever doubted you. If this is the alternative, all is forgiven. I'll take half-baked philosophical pontificating over dialogue mostly consisting of unfunny quips any day; at least you know what the word "tension" means. Though to be fair to Ridley, this might not be much of a movie, but it is one hell of a book report. He summarised the shit outta that thing.

Whoa, these NASA recruitment videos are getting pretty elaborate. They even hired famous actors and everything! Coasts along on its 'space is cool, being smart is cool' attitude, which I appreciated. Easy to see how this can be considered boring (most obstacles are setbacks for one scene before moving on) but I was happy simply seeing some actual science in my sci-fi again. However, much like my existence, as more time passes it gets increasingly sappy and self-fellating-y.

I have a feeling that, after the universal ridicule of Prometheus' somewhat loose implementation/Interpretation/understanding of science, this is Ridley Scott going: "happy now, bitch?". A thoroughly enjoyable and surprisingly lighthearted piece of semi-hard sci-fi.

Science saves the day. Matt, a scientist, conquers all but a few: managers and other non-stemmy folk who, in their non-stemmy non-awesomeness, pose a danger to the endeavour of science, and thus the salvation of the earth. And then Matt conquers them too. All say yay, have faith, bow down to this Big Other.

Matt Damon is satisfying as the self-reliant astronaut stranded on Mars after an emergency evacuation. He finds countless technical solutions to survive long enough to be rescued. Mishaps threaten his ability to survive. Good performances, memorable scenes, great CGI, SFX & music. Questionable but reasonable story, believable dialog & some quite humorous moments. Poignant, interesting & engaging throughout. Not without flaws, but many great tense moments, mostly exciting & fun to watch.

This is a really great movie! Not inly is it some of Ridley Scott's best work, but he captures the book very well (which is rare for novel-based movies) and Matt Damon is just awesome as the title character. Solid film-making with it's good acting, soldier direction, awesome screenplay, some great visuals, some intense and interesting, detailed moments, and even some solid gags and laughs along the trip. Had a blast. Worth a watch without a doubt.

The Martian is not your typical sci-fi survival film. Ridley Scott takes this standard concept and breathes a ton of new life into it. There's a lot of comedy that actually works here too, which is a little surprising given the bleak premise. The visual direction from Scott is among his best, particularly his use of practical effects, and Damon's performance is among the best of his career. This is definitely a film I loved watching and want to watch again and again and again.

Barely ten minutes in and I was fearing the worst for this one, but then it finds its feet and becomes much more than the Cast Away on Mars it first appears. Damon is perfect for the lead, giving us someone to root for who feels real and we can genuinely sympathise with. The rest of the cast grow into their roles too, and while you never forget you're watching a book adaptation, the direction does enough to entertain. Engrossing 'til the end, and one where the (lengthy) runtime fits perfectly.

Big budget space flicks about humanity working together and beating the odds are preferable to superhero movies, so if this is how Hollywood wants to spend $108 million dollars, I guess I can't complain too much. It could be worse. Space is the place, guys.

I enjoyed the science and a bunch of the jokes worked (some were really forced), but I had a hard time with this one. It wasn't bad by any means, but it felt too lighthearted to the point that I never felt any risk, and I didn't sense any chemistry among the actors (even though it's a great cast). Competently shot but unremarkable, I'm destined to be the contrarian with this one.

Not something that hasn't been done before, but pretty good nonetheless. Some compare it to "Cast Away," but I find a better Tom Hanks analogue in "Apollo 13," there was good deal of jury rigging with billion dollar equipment in that movie too. If you're going to emulate a space survival movie, that's a good one to do and Damon pulls it off pretty well.

The most harmless, vanilla movie of 2015. The plot moves along as expected with no hiccups or any deviation from the norm, except when it's convenient for the story. The entire movie hinges on the performance of its lead and Matt Damon is a good enough actor to where you can watch him talk into a webcam and not want to shoot yourself, not many people could pull this off. A late-comer in the recent wave of American survival cinema, Ridley Scott really scrapes the barrel with The Martian, a formulaic rescue procedural about a botanist who doesn't know he can grow indoors food hydroponically, a bunch of other guys spouting pseudu-scientific nonsense authoritatively, and billions of US$ being wasted on a long-shot effort to save a single life. I'm not saying "Gravity" was perfectly effective, but it didn't make me roll my eyes anywhere near as much as this did.

Given its limitations as a visual medium, It's exceedingly rare that a film successfully -compellingly - dramatizes heroism of the intellectual kind. This is one of those films. Although it's a work of fiction which allows it to continually raise the life & death stakes, all the technical talk always feels real & conveys all of the awe one might feel in the presence of real-life engineers. It's also reminder of all the mind-boggling achievements NASA could continue to accomplish w/ our support

Solid movie. The martian reminded me of movies like Moon (2009) where one is left behind in outer space. What seperated both movies from eachother is that the martian has a more American feeling to it. Doing the impossible and such, bring our hero home. I really liked the music used in the film, it reminded me of Pink Floydian tunes, landscapes were nice to look at. What I did dislike was that the characters were not all really fleshed out. And the script was predictable. Scenes were too slow.

Despite myself, I was quite entertained by its humor and unashamedly optimistic spirit. But it tends to tell more than show with self-satisfied dialogues (and monologues) that border on the cheesy. As a result, it lacks the existential depth and poetic beauty of Gravity.

Some great visuals on Mars. I would have loved it if the shots of the planet were kept for much longer like in Blade Runner and 2001. This movie was good but it could have been great. The entire NASA portion should have been scrapped or at least not cut to every 2 minutes. Many of the jokes didn't land and there were some cheap Hollywood devices (sappy music, unknown nerd rushes into executive meeting with surprise plan, etc.)

While the perils are relatively few and far between for a survival picture, the danger that does strike is absolutely gripping, and the overly-telegraphed and lightweight story and characters are compensated for by a charming sense of humor and pervading sense of human unity and triumph.

Good. In its essence a Robinson Crusoe-esque story, but It does bring in too many secondary characters in my opinion. It takes the focus away from Watney's problems and the sense of loneliness he probably would have had. The film doesn't address this enough. Still, I had fun watching it. It kept me engaged throughout, although it often felt the need to "science" it up. At first I kind of liked that, but it got old quick. The music could have had a better use than comedic relief.

The best thing about The Martian was the amount of chutzpah Matt Damon's character has. It's on the verge of being a sci-fi movie played largely for laughs. Actually I wish they had gone with that angle, because when the script got serious, it got stupid. There were just too many coincidences and implausible, million-to-one shot events linking up to get Matt home. The politics were hokey too. Great looking film, solid emotional basis & structure, but come on... pull the other one, Ridley.

It's better paced and less technical than the book - a good adaptation all-around. Albeit I don't consider the base material as great as the universal praise would have you believe. It's just not that involving and the movie also suffers from it. Interestingly, I thought the off-Mars action was handled exceptionally well, even though the casting was more of a hit (Jeff Daniels) and miss (Sean Bean - as much as I like the man).

A skimming over of emotions and the consequences of time (particularly with the crew's decision to go back) are the only standout flaws in this exhilarating thriller featuring a fast-paced back-and-forth between satisfying survival science-ing on Mars (Damon's Mark adds a wry wit to the proceedings) and tense rescue-planning on Earth (a refreshingly diverse cast shines here). Any lack of suspense in the quickly solved conflicts of the first half is made up for in the nail-biting climax.

Perhaps it speaks to the times that the most unbelievable "fiction" in this sci-fi is the privilege NASA is given here, driven by a surprising, yet infectious, optimism about space exploration. This simplicity propels the whole film, making it immensely watchable - but does nothing for the characters and writing on display. Episodes of Star Trek have more depth, suspense and humor than this - which is not to say it is a bad film on its own terms, just a missed opportunity of sorts.

I just can't really think of anything that wasn't good or that I didn't like about it, apart from one line of dialogue. The direction is excellent, the screenplay is really tight and has a nice sense of humour, the visual effects were great, and the music choices were fun. The Martian is energetic, upbeat and consistently funny. Damon is great in the titular role, and there's a good balance between his activity on Mars and the rest of the cast on Earth. Scott's direction is solid, producing visually pleasing (though occasionally crowded) shots throughout the film. The use of "disco" pop music, worked into the plot, did a good job of keeping the tone more optimistic. Akin to Gravity meets Cast Away, the film is more entertaining than both, but perhaps not as deep.

Focuses on technical instead of emotional/psychological aspects, which I can appreciate. A suspenseful and engaging one-man-survival with a sense of humor. It looks fantastic and Damon delivers a charismatic performance as the optimistic astronaut M. Watney, this results in a very positive approach on a horrifying situation. I think the movie could have benefitted from a deeper examination of the despairing circumstances, instead it's more of a crowd-pleaser that feels a little cheesy at times. But that doesn't take away the away the fact that it was an enjoyable movie.

It's another lost in space film that we've seen before. Entire scenes feel like a rehash of Apollo 13. Matt Damon on Mars is just a shipwreck film combined with a lost in space film. With that being said this is done very well for what is essentially a rehash of stuff we've all seen before. The Mars landscape and the dangers faced are intriguing. The characters, situations, and dialogue is a bit too cliche though. Especially the end where it falls apart. Ridley Scott is back to form at least.

A rare movie that is over 2 hours and really needed more time. A good extra 20-30 min would have made this an all time classic instead of just a very good science fiction movie. That said, while pacing was sometimes too fast when problems arose (not giving you proper time to even digest them before they're fixed) it did pretty much everything else right. Far more consistent than interstellar so the question is what's better; higher highs and lower lows or better averages?

The Martian brings nothing new to the table, but with basic suspense techniques and a simple but intriguing story, it manages to keep you on the edge of your seat. Damon does an excellent job. Whilst TM falls into all the clichés of Apollo13, Interstellar, Gravity, Castaway territory ( most annoying being the "'What an incredible human' smile" on everyone's face), and uses similar plot contrivances (such as typing/explaining) TM is way ahead of Gravity in having a plausible, likable hero that we are all routing for and a far more believable tense and epic plot. The greetings at the end and the beginning of The Martian into the sky as an salute to his best work (Alien, of course...) feels totally ambivalent: No cold, caustic, death-bringing-space for a change - only this little 100-million-don't-give-up-flick. Lacks the pure style and atmosphere that makes Ridley Scott's best work great, but it certainly is a step up from the likes of Robin Hood and Exodus, with some likable characters and a good-humored (if a bit long) script. Literally a montage lasted the entire four minutes and fourteen seconds of David Bowie's Starman.

The quality of this film cannot be understated. The writing, cast, acting, directing are all great. It was funnier than I expected and really showed people caring about each other and doing their best to help bring everyone home. It felt a lot to me like Apollo 13 and is probably just as good. Having said that, it's not my favorite kind of story so I'm docking a few points even though I realize this is just a matter of personal taste.

* Although I was fully immersed and enjoyed to whole movie, it was just too easy going and light headed.
NASA looks like a joke, but it's a whole lot of fun. Not Scott's best work.

Better than the trailer! Cool movie, I'll watch it again if I have the chance. Not the ordinary sci-fi drama.

To call this movie bombastic would be an overstep, but I can't shake the feeling that this is big and pretty with not a lot of oomph. It started to feel inconsequential. I don't know how much MORE this movie brings to the table, what new thoughts it adds to the conversation. If this is ultimately convention, it's convention done pretty well, entertaining, and is totally worth seeing on a big screen. It tells a long story in adequate time, though some scenes are not given the time to breathe.

The Martian is the best hard sci-fi space movie in quite some time. It's better than Interstellar, it's better than Gravity, and it's even better than Moon. This is a fantastic film about science and humanity, all packed neatly into a thrilling, engaging, beautiful, and surprisingly funny package. This is the reason we shouldn't give up on Ridley Scott.

It was exciting and just realistic enough to make for some great sci-fi action. Matt Damon is convincing, the special effects are great, a return to form for Ridley Scott, and a nice adaptation from Weir's fantastic book.

I can't figure out why Ridley Scott has any reputation at all as a director, and this flick does nothing to change my mind. Science geeks will have a field day jeering the numerous errors and impossibilities.

It's so refreshing to watch a modern Hollywood film where you can feel confident that the characters are solving their problems in a realistic, non deus ex machina way, and even though there was a deus ex at the end, well, it's still Hollywood at the end of the day - it didn't piss me off at all, because i'd enjoy it so much so far.

It's been my entire lifetime, 33 years, since Ridley Scott made a good movie. So it was about time. That's four now, Scotty, let's see you get to five. Also, having followed the crazy bullshit that is Project B.E.A.S.T (google it) really gave me a new appreciation for all the space science in here.

Not so boring, somehow gripping story. Most probably the reason is Matt Damon's good performance. However it's not even complete movie. It was like watching space advertisements with some Damon sketches.

Plays easily enough, but with little to ponder or think about as it unfolds. I don't think the film does a good enough job rooting us in Mark's loneliness. With all the cut backs to earth and crew, Mark almost seems like he's around the corner from his friends. This removes much of the personal drama from the piece. But at least it looks pretty, and, well, science is pretty great, isn't it?

The lightish tone is a blessing and a curse. At first it seems refreshing, but it also robs the film of any serious impact. The difficult moral questions are glossed over in favour of a populist 'humanism' where we just take for granted that all lives matter. It also plays like a recruitment video for Nasa that will help strengthen relations with China. Overall it's a competently made crowd pleaser that's predictable and actually kind of dumb, despite all of the scientific 'realism'.

If Interstellar is theory-bending sci-fi and Gravity is artsy sci-fi, Martian is your hard, real-world sci-fi that celebrates the power, wonders, and importance of math and science (a PSA in many respects!). Several scenes felt much like scenes from "Apollo 13": things in Martian could easily happen in the near future. The script is corny in places; Glover's character especially - while entertaining - just didn't feel like a good fit for the tone of the film.
