American Primeval

Brutal, mean vindictive watch. Kind of like The Revenant meets McCarthy type westernism. Good cast, based on real-ish events. Kinda repetitive in its semi-hopelessness but I did enjoy the grittiness of it.

Starts off really well: visceral filmmaking, beautiful and grim, similar to The Revenant. And the Mormons as religious fanatics occupying land in an effort to protect their people at all deadly cost is intriguingly topical (I´m looking at you Israel..!). But somewhere between the scene where a young boy with a broken leg utters “It’s only pain” and the clichéd love story in a sugercoated ending, the series looses its way.

American Primeval delivers a brutal, sepia-toned depiction of the Wild West.

Good acting, and well shot.. The story was decent, though they made the Mormons look like bad guys without any redeeming qualities.

This should be 80 but I'll deduct 2 points because there's a character that I found very annoying for too long. It was no doubt on purpose, but it's hard to forget still.

Amazing show, raw, gritty, non-appologetic, with fine acting.

Organised around the biggest of all contemporary cinematic clichés: the best thing a (substitute) father can do is disappear, leaving a pot of gold, so that the family can go on without him (to the Californian paradise). More generally, the characters and events are all constructed in standard ways for current television, and who we’re supposed to care about and what we’re supposed to think are matters that are all laid out at every step. In short, there’s nothing “primeval” going on here.
