Had potential but ended up being unable to hold my attention. All the storylines were meandering and the actors seemed more interested in making artistic statements than making a good movie.

Well made movie, well acted but I strongly disagree with the story content even though it is a reality that our society faces...

Beginning to end, top to bottom, left to right a phenomenal adaptation of one of the greatest plays I have ever read. Justin Kirk and Jeffrey Wright are particularly outstanding, and Emma Thompson and Meryl Streep are, to no one's surprise, perfect in their multiple roles. Even Al Pacino, who is usually only adept at playing Al Pacino, did a great job as Roy Cohn.

Long and a little too theatrical for a television production, but masterful performances (And I do mean masterful) are the real reason to see this film.

And how do you complete perfection... you call Emma Thompson and Meryl Streep. Sure it's theatrical... but it was a theater piece after all. Nearly Flawless.

Brilliant acting, excellent script, though the ending message was pretty balloony. Always enjoying for rewatch.

Certainly, this one's a bit creepy at times and surely hard to swallow but the dramaturgy is simply captivating. Kushner's screenplay makes such a powerful statement about the crisis which started when AIDS became an undeniable issue. Nichols visualized Kushner's ideas in a very vivid and occasionally frightening manner. Concerning the cast, one could pick almost each of the main characters and say he or her was great but Jeffrey Wright was simply outstanding. 02/05/2009

The performances, direction, and visuals in this epic miniseries are beautiful and mindblowing. Streep, Wilson, Thompson, Parker, Pacino--they all excel, and Nichols' connection to the story and its message is clear and his execution is innovative. Admittedly, the source material is one of the best plays of the 20th century, so there was little possibility for failure, but the miniseries more than exceeds expectations.

Some of the parts are better than others, but overall a "pleasant" tale of AIDS in the 80s.

Masterfully directed by Nichols, it presents a spiritual perspective featuring Thompson as an angel of mercy to a man dying of AIDS while Streep appears as an apparition to another.

A hopeful and beauteous force flows behind this wonderful adapatation of the play. The modern beauty and elegance rivals anything produced on screen or televvision in the last 50 years. With very little flaws, Angels in America succeeds in putting dreams to life. Emma Thompson, Justin Kirk, Meryl Streep, Jeffrey Wright, Ben Shenkman, Patrick Wilson, Mary Louise Parker all give absolutely gorgeous and real performances. Certainly not to be missed. Fantastic.

An important journey with incredibly constructed characters and a story that needs to be told. It's better to think of it as a two-part film than a miniseries.

The histrionics are very effective (a standard trait of Nichols' films, it seems) but the fantasy continually pushes things too far over-the-top.

the only reason for not ranking this higher is the parts that are too american for me to get. other than that, this one is a script, directing and acting masterpiece. meryl streep is at her best.

This is film marmite - you'll love it or hate it. For me it was a beautifully acted and intellectually deep production. Honest and well balanced characterisations. A masterful mix of tragic insight and bitter-sweet comedy. Impossible to pick out a single actor as this is a true ensemble piece. Thought provoking, this requires the suspension of disbelief, but if you stick with it, it's a film that will stay with you

Beautiful, painful, hopeful. The film works on a number of levels: personal, political, religious--weaving them all together seamlessly. The writing is outstanding here, with Jeffrey Wright's 'Belize' and Justin Kirk's 'Prior' being the most notable for me. I especially loved the final hour or so, as the characters increasingly look beyond their lives and grapple with the realities (or not) of existence after death.

I have no doubt this worked better as a play. The extended speeches to the audience (probably effective in the theater--I never saw the plays), especially in the last episode, really don't work in the TV/movie milieu. Excellent performances by the actors, and when two characters are just talking, it's intermittently compelling. But those gaudy, over-the-top fantasy sequences... any metaphorical or allegorical meaning there may be is completely overwhelmed by the garishness.

You can't blame them, they believe in Sex & Angels. They always, constantly want to bang (DESIRE) & get rid of the guilt (SUFFER) at once.
