Never saw the reason folks went gaga over it. Spader fans will like Spader being weird in various ways.

It's a David E. Kelley legal show, and so it covered the pressing social issues of the day (many of them still relevant today). What set Boston Legal apart was its humor, its jazzy tone, its general absurdity, and most importantly its character relationships. At the heart of this show is Alan and Denny, not leftist ideology run amuck, and by the third season that heart had become genuinely touching.

Basically a textbook example of the kind of show I found generically watchable in the mid-00s.

Losing more characters than Game of Thrones is the most impressive mark of this series. With a litany of cast quitting there hardly goes an episode where they don't have to explain the mysterious disappearance of an actor. This is coupled with equally uncomfortable introduction episodes where they pretend they've always been around and try to make arcs that can catch up to the shows two mainstays. Undeniably Spader and Shatner are the reason to watch. Ham-handedly pushes a socialist agenda.

Boston Legal is nearly perfect. If not for one or two characters or story arcs to bring it down. James Spader and William Shatner are an amazing pair and by far the best reason to watch the series. If you don't like them, the non stop quipping, rich dialogue and fascinating court scenes will keep you around.
