My least favourite genre happens to be the critics' favourite: "Sad people being sad".

There’s a short list of directors that you do not touch for remake status. Ingmar Bergman should have been on this list. Reason being: their stature in the history of film and an inimitable talent that would make any remake instantly laughable, and I would have thought, marketably bankrupt. That this was the one chosen from Bergman is almost more confounding, as the themes and ideas are so easily copied without outright plagiarism. My only rating as protest (have not and will not see it).

1884: it was so deep. so intense and so mind and heart thrilling. especially for me, it look like exact copy of life (except the cheating part!)

The first episode gives the feeling that this remake will also be an update that tries to reflect on how married life has changed, but the subsequent episodes are more like a straight copy (with reversed roles, which isn't really an interesting change). The performances are fine, but cannot compare with Josephson and Ullmann, and the whole thing lacks the energy, intensity and spark of the original. Everything is somehow restrained. MARRIAGE STORY is a far better engagement with Bergman's film.

VERY strong performances from Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain. It feels like a very realistic depiction of a broken marriage, and I was glued to the screen the entire time this was on. That being said, it is extremely depressing, so I don't think I will want to watch this again. The breaking the 4th wall at the beginning of each episode was a strange choice though.
